“She wants you to ask what she’s thinking about,” Cosima prompts.

“Right, so, what are you thinking about?” I ask Rochelle, following Cosima's lead.

“Weddings.”

“Knew she was going to say that.” Cosima laughs. She and I are going to talk later because she led me right into this trap.

“Well, since my only daughter at the time”—Rochelle pauses, glancing at me then Tova—“went and got married without telling me anything—” She gives Cosima a pointed look before her attention comes fully back to me. “Can you believe that? My princess Cosima didn’t let me throw a grand wedding for her.”

I think she’s nudging me to let her throw me a big wedding. I have never given weddings much thought. Not sure that’s my vibe, but I don’t want to disappoint her. I could tell her that I was the one that helped Cosima run away to the country she ended up getting married in. Then she might not want to have a wedding for me.

“You got to do all that with Tova.” Cosima comes to my rescue. Which she should since she was the one that led me into this conversation.

“Tova was trying to get out of that wedding. It’s not the same. That was rushed. There was no shower, and none of the other small things.” Rochelle waves it off with her hand, the giant diamond on her finger almost blinding when the light from the chandelier hits it. “I’m sorry you didn’t get all of the little things, Tova.” She looks over toward Tova.

“I got Warren, so that’s all that matters,” Tova says, which brings a smile to Rochelle’s face.

“What she really means is she didn’t get all of those things,” Cosima adds in.

“You hush over there. I’m talking to my other daughter.” She turns her attention back to me.

Rochelle calling me her daughter takes me by surprise but in a really good way. I probably shouldn’t mention to her that I again was ready to get Tova a whole new identity to get out of that wedding. Cosima and her mom are a lot alike. It's sweet and endearing. My dad is always saying how much I remind him of my mom too.

“Ours would be rushed,” Ronan says, leaning forward to see his mother. In Ronan's head, we're a done deal. The paper is only a paper, but he's more than okay stacking the wedding certificate on top for good measure. The man is thorough. I shift in my seat thinking about how thorough he was during our shower.

“I bet I could wiggle my way into city records and have it done. I could even backdate it.” I know Ro would be down with that.

“Is wiggle like a code for hacking?” Cosima asks.

“Semantics.” I shrug. “Tomato, tomahto.”

“Six of one, half a dozen of the other,” Tova singsongs. It’s how she always responds when I say that. Dang, I’ve missed her. I’m finding that to be the case with a lot of things when it comes to their family dynamics.

It's interesting to see how free and in the open they live. My whole life has been the opposite.

Cosima lures her mom into another conversation. “And BOOM! I blew that place up.” That is the tenth time I’ve heard that story now.

I lean over into Ronan. “Everything good?” I ask.

“We need to straighten out a few details, but that is for tomorrow.” That's what I figured.

I have a few ideas of my own, but right now I'm enjoying being here in this moment with everyone. Rochelle’s attention doesn't bother me either. She's a mom that loves her family. It hits me that she would be the grandmother to my children. I'm hanging out with these pregnant chicks, and it's contagious.

“Do we need to feed Nick?” He’s not going to try and hightail it out of here. Nick has his tail tucked between his legs. He’s going to stay and help. That’s his key to get back to the compound. If they let him.

I’d gone off on Nick about how messed up and wrong he’d been about everything. I also told him his crush on me is weird, and he’d hate me if he were to really date me. The man’s ego could never handle me.

“I had it sent up.”

“That was nice of you. I hope you sent clean clothes too.” Ronan tossed him into the bed of the truck after putting a hood over his head so he didn’t know where the hole was. I’m not sure I could find my way back there. The outside isn’t my thing.

“It was and I did.” He lets out a low chuckle.

The table grows quiet, and I realize now everyone is watching us interact. “I think we’re going to head up to bed,” Ronan announces.

“See, now you went and scared them off, Mom,” Cosima playfully accuses Rochelle.
