Ronan’s hand grips my chin. His touch is firm and unbreakable but somehow gentle too. “I bet I’m the only one you’re watching.” There is a threat that lingers in the air.

It should scare me; all of this should, but it doesn’t. “You’re crazy,” I tell him. I’m sure that’s projection, but whatever.

“Then you made me this way,” he says, staring into my eyes, and I know he’s dead serious. “Now give me your mouth.”

“You can’t just—” His hold on my chin tightens; he thrusts his hips up, making me gasp when I feel the hard outline of his cock pressed against my ass.

“Give me your mouth,” he orders again. I press my thighs together. I should tell him to fuck off… Or maybe fuck me?

Instead I nod, leaning in. The second my mouth touches his, Ronan takes over the kiss. He dominates it and me.

Chapter Nine

RONAN

Isent Ellie to bed before things got out of hand and I fucked her on the dining room table. That wouldn’t help with me winning her father over at all. Which I’ve spent most of the day doing, along with meeting more of the locals.

They were leery of me at first until Frank told them I was with Ellie. That turned them from leery to protective and pushy with questions. I answered some and avoided others. I'll give what I can, but I also have a family I protect. This place is a compound. A well-armed one at that. It’s really not that much different from my family's estate.

As much as I wanted to crawl into that bed with Ellie, I knew she needed time. I could tell she was overwhelmed by all of this, her mind racing with a million thoughts. I really did just show up on her.

She’d been panicking over my safety, and then I was there in a place she thought she’d kept off the radar. I hadn’t thought about how me being able to find her would be disheartening to her. She prides herself on being able to essentially be a ghost. I’ll have to circle back to it so that I assure her this wasn’t on her. I would have found her one way or another. There isn’t anything or anyone that could’ve stopped me.

Right now she needs rest, and my goal is to give Ellie what she needs. Someone should be watching over her. Most times she’s out there on her own. Those days are over now that I’m here. She’ll never have to hide behind the scenes again if she doesn’t want to.

“That should do it for today,” Frank says, pulling a cloth out from his back pocket to wipe his brow. It’s hot as shit out here today, but the heat has never bothered me. Not much does.

I’ve been working with him for most of the day. It’s nice out here. I could get used to it. Life is a bit simpler, but I think Ellie needs both worlds. Each one suits her in a different way. I want to suit her.

"I'll finish stacking these." I nod to the pile of wood we've been chopping for the last hour. He nods.

"I'm going to shower and then head over to Kirt’s. It's his turn to make dinner."

"Thanks," I tell him.

He doesn't have to say he's going to give Ellie and me time together. I get it. Oddly, I get Frank all around. He wants what's best for Ellie, and he'll do anything to make sure she's happy. The man had even allowed tech into his world when he’d kept it locked out for years because his daughter wanted it, and that came first to him.

We both want to make sure she gets what she needs. Ellie is special, a different breed. One that should be treasured. I don’t want to stop or hinder her. I only want to keep her safe, and selfishly, that keeps me at her side.

I finish with the woodpile before I head toward the fence line. It’s clever and unassuming. The simple barbed wire fence is what farms use for cattle. Out here with the open land, I’m sure that’s what people think is beyond the fence.

When you put up tall fences and thick security, it often draws more attention. The place is still wired up with trip sensors and cameras. I’m impressed, and I know my little fox had a part in it.

When I make it back to the house, I let myself in. I cock my head, listening to see if Frank is still here, but it's quiet. I head straight for Ellie's room; I don't bother knocking. Why should I? She's been watching me for months. The illusion of privacy between us is now gone, and it won't be coming back.

As much as I enjoyed our little cat and mouse game, I enjoy being able to touch her more. To breathe in her sweet vanilla smell. The way her mouth fits perfectly against mine.
