“Yeah,” I say, crossing my ankles and leaning on my hip. I’m wearing a pair of Wranglers and a lace top that my boobs are about to fall out of. I’m surprised Dean let me go with just beard burn. “I have that meeting with a new business at one, then you’re my two.”
He nods eagerly. “Missy said you thought they were weird.”
“Yeah, they don’t have any presence here, or in any town this small, but they want me to give them a plan. I don’t know. I’ve done it, but I wish I had something to work off. It’s my first time being a part of a franchise like this.”
“I bet you’re kicking ass, though,” he says, and the condescending tone he usually possesses isn’t in his voice. It’s almost like he believes what he’s saying.
I eye him. “You like me now that I’m out of the house?”
He laughs, running his fingers through his hair before he cups the back of his neck. “It isn’t that I don’t like you, Kenni. It’s that I know how much Sadie hates me, and I worry you’ll feel the same.”
I smile. “I will like you as long as you treat my sister well.”
“Done,” he says with so much conviction in his voice my heart swells. “I love her, Kenni.”
“I know, Nyle.”
We share a small smile, and he mutters, “I’m meeting you at Dean’s?”
“Yup.” He gives me a curt nod, and I force a smile. I don’t want to hate the guy. I think he’s just insecure, and maybe he’ll grow out of it. Missy loves him, and all I can really ask for is that she’s loved the way she deserves.
He seems caught off guard by my smile, offering a timid one in return just as Sadie hooks her arm through mine, completely ignoring him as always. She rode over with Matt since I was running late.
“Let’s go,” she says. “Missy’s in the car.”
I call out a goodbye to everyone before we head to the car, where Missy is, in fact, waiting.
My sister flashes me a wide, full-of-trouble grin that reminds me of the way she looked at me before we’d get into something that Dean had to save us from, and my heart clenches in my chest.
I hope she never stops looking at me like that.
Especially when I tell her that when Dean comes to save us from whatever the hell we’re going to get up to, he’ll mainly be coming for me.
CHAPTER
THIRTY-SEVEN
Kenni
To my surprise, we hit the floor before we start drinking.
Not our usual MO.
We don’t need alcohol to be Shenanigans Inc. We ride the bull, which I send the boys a video of. Ash sent me back a screenshot of me screaming with laughter and told me it was my new photo contact. The boys are always saying how much happier I look, and I can’t wait for them to learn it’s because of Dean. Ash and Flint have always adored Dean, and I am a bit worried to tell them since it’s so soon after I left their dad, but I know I’ll have their support.
With love warming my heart, I play pool and darts with Missy and Sadie before heading to the floor for our favorite line dances. Our laughter is loud, our dancing amazing, and that sense of safety that Sadie and Missy offer me is like a hug as the music blares through the speakers.
I love them.
I’ll always love them, and while I know Dean and I have Sadie’s support, I am scared shitless of Missy’s reaction. Sadie offered to tell Missy, but I’m the one who has to do it. We’re adults, and if she has a problem, we’ll have to figure it out because I love being in Dean’s orbit.
When we’re out of breath and in need of hydration, Sadie points to the bar to let us know she’s getting drinks. I follow Missy to a spot in the corner that thankfully is a little quieter. When she sits, she pulls me to her and wraps her arms around my neck, pressing me into her chest, her breasts hot against my face. “Missy, you’re suffocating me with your titties.”
She lets out a barking laugh but hugs me tighter. “I just want you to know how much I love you.”
Great. All the guilt comes crashing into my chest as I sigh deeply, but I still bask in her love. I hug her back, and she kisses my temple. When I glance up, she looks at me in such a loving way, my eyes burn. She moves a curl behind my ear, and her eyes sparkle with different shades of blue. “Since coming home, you’ve been so much brighter, Kenni.”
“I’m home.”
She boops my nose. “Yup, where you belong.”
And I’m having regular sex with a beast of a man. I’m pretty sure I’ve had more sex in a week than I have in my entire life.
