Skyye

did he let her, or did she just get knocked up with you two big-headed idiots and, unlike my parents, then got married.

Skyye

not that I’m complaining. My parents don’t belong together.

Ash

True. Not on the big-headed thing tho. I have a good size head.

Flint

eh, it’s a little egg like.

Skyye

yeah, so they’re so together.

Skyye

the whole week I’ve been here, they have coffee together, watch TV together, sit on the porch together, and there are a lot of heated looks.

Ash

like get-naked looks?

Skyye

I don’t know what that looks like.

Ash

the way you look at Jack Hughes.

Skyye

omg, the way he sticks his tongue out when he shoots…

Skyye

Sends Homer Simpson drooling GIF.

Ash

eh, he’s okay.

Flint

I’d go gay for him.

Skyye

LMFAO.

Ash

please don’t admit that ever again.

Flint

what? He’s loaded and can handle a stick.

Ash

please stop.

Ash

anyway, maybe Mom and Dean are just flirting. They’ve always been a little flirty.

Skyye

Kenni was in the kitchen in Dad’s hockey shirt.

Flint

damn, they’re totally banging.

Ash

or Mom stole his shirt.

Flint

yeah, after getting naked with him.

Flint

okay, did you ask?

Skyye

ask what? Hey, are you banging Kenni?

Ash

yeah, then if he says yes, tell him I need to know his intentions.

Ash

wait, what if it’s just them hooking up?

Ash

just cause they’re old and shit doesn’t mean they’re trying to be together.

Flint

shit. I didn’t think of that. We did tell her to have fun.

Skyye

ugh, no, don’t say that!

Skyye

I was looking forward to having two older brothers.

Ash

I don’t want a little sister or an uncle dad.

Flint

we can’t call him Uncle Dad.

Ash

Why not? It’s perfect.

Flint

you’re dumb. And, Skyye?

Skyye

what?

Flint

You don’t have to be my sister for me to love you forever.

Skyye

<3

Ash

fine, I hope they get married and you become my sister. I’m just a pain.

Flint

we know.

Skyye

love you guys.

Flint

go get more information.

Ash

yeah and make sure Dean knows I want to know his intentions.

Flint

Jesus, you’re gonna make Uncle Dad run for the hills.

Skyye

I’m not calling Kenni Aunt Mom.

Ash

see, this is why you can’t be our little sister. You don’t listen.

Skyye

hell, your mom doesn’t listen either!

Flint

we know.

Ash

it’s hard raising parents nowadays.

CHAPTER

THIRTY-SIX

Kenni

“I don’t want to go to work.”

Dean’s mouth is hot and wet against my jaw as he lifts my hands, threading our fingers before locking them above my head. He has me pinned against his door, his body pressing firmly into mine, his arousal hard against my belly. He feels so damn good, especially when his voice is all on edge and rough against my lips. “I want to stay right here with you.”

I smile against his lips. “But I’m going out.”

His lips quirk. “Not if I keep you in my bed.”

I giggle as he trails his mouth along my neck. His mustache tickles my skin, while his beard scrapes and sends tingles throughout my body. It’s been a week since the fire station, and Dean is more than I ever could have imagined. He’s patient, didn’t say a word when we had dinner as a big family that had the potential to bring Jerry Springer out of the grave. He sat beside Skyye, but his eyes were on me. I know he thought I would bring it up, tell Missy, but I couldn’t. I tried to hide in my room when we got home, but once Skyye went to bed, Dean pulled me down my bed by my ankles to carry me to his room.

Where he devoured me whole then said he would wait forever for me.

But then, he reminded me that I only had a week left.

He drives me crazy.

Every day, he makes me happier than the day before. He doesn’t miss a cup of coffee with me in the morning. We play cribbage when Skyye goes to bed. We talk about our days, and he makes me laugh. It’s so different from how it was with Stratford. There, I felt like the hired help to raise my boys, but this thing with Dean feels like a true partnership.

It’s absolutely terrifying.

And so unexpected.

Yet, I’m running forward for him.

Dean is just so much fun, and him being a dad should be downright illegal. He loves Skyye so much, he supports her like no other, and watching them “train” for “Minute to Win It” is probably my favorite thing to do. When I’m not laughing, I’m swooning for this man who has been so important to me since we were kids. He was right there, even when I was miles away. He was in my life, and I never saw him coming. He wasn’t part of the plan. My GPS wasn’t set on him, no signs pointing right to him.

He just appeared.

Like a sudden sunbeam through the heavy fog over the mountains.

Quiet, unassuming, but so damn sure of me.

Impossible to ignore.

The laughter between the three of us feels like home, and I miss my boys. I want them here. I want them to experience this kind of true contentment. To the point that I don’t care that Stratford is fighting my lawyer left and right. Okay—that bastard does get to me, but Dean does what he can to distract me from it.
