Her lip wobbles as her watery eyes meet mine. “I love you.”
I take a sharp breath, still unable to fully comprehend how someone so beautiful and lovely would love me. With emotion burning in my chest for this girl, I say, “I’ve been in love with you since we were kids, back when I thought you smiling at me was the biggest thing I’d ever feel. Turns out, I was right… It was the start of everything.” A tear rolls down her cheek, and I feel my own about to fall. “I’ve loved you through you picking scabs from a blood oath with our sisters, running from the cops, three incredible kids with other people, and every ‘someday’ I ever dreamed about.”
“Oh, Dean,” she cries, reaching out to cup my hand that is holding the ring between us. “I love you so damn much.”
I wink, and in doing so, a tear rolls down my face. “So now, I’m asking. And I need you to be real honest with me, none of this holding back how we feel bullshit.” I waggle my brows, and her dimples flash. “Will you marry me? Grow old with me on a porch swing, dance only with me, laugh with me, raise a little chaos, and never let go?”
Kenni doesn’t hesitate. I don’t even think she takes a breath. She cups my face and says, “Yes. Forever.”
“And then some.”
As our lips meet with enthusiasm, I know that my life is finally starting.
In the back of a cop car.
…with my KenniLeigh.
