“Start car. I help you.” Seeing Johnny with my nephew has my ovaries working overtime, watching him with kindness and patience, it’s everything.

“Here you go.” I hand them my keys and bag before dipping back into the car and cleaning up.

“Winn, stop that. Shit can wait.” Johnny’s arm bands around my waist, pressing me to his body.

“Shit. Auntie say shit all da time,” Sebastian rats me out. My shoulders quake at his analogy. I don’t use it all the time, but I do more than I should.

“Is that so?” he plays into Seb’s comment while maneuvering me away from his car, holding me close as he clicks the button on the key fob to unlock my car.

“Yep.” I roll my eyes at the two guys messing with me.

“I guess I’ll just stand here,” I state, waiting on them to do their thing.

“And look pretty,” Johnny says, ducking into my car and starting the engine. I’m trying to remember the last time I cleaned the inside. I’m sure there are shoes, toys, and more clothes from our travels than ever.

“That’s exactly what I’ll do.” During the shuffle, I had the forethought to close the doors as to not let the air conditioning out and make his vehicle hotter than it needs to be.

“Alright, help me get him settled into his seat.” We work together, Johnny watching methodically as Sebastian buckles himself into the five-point harness car seat. I tighten the straps, and then he helps me into my car, stealing another kiss that throws me for a loop. It’s not until I’m driving down the road that I realize we’ve basically slid back into our old routine, this time with the added bonus of Sebastian.

JOHNNY

“You get your shit fixed?” Dad asks me as Mom gets Sebastian and Winnie settled. She’s bustling around, asking who needs food or who wants a drink. It didn’t go unnoticed by me that my wife has lost weight, too fucking much weight. The places she lost it the most are the ones I love the most. Her ass, tits, and stomach are gone. I didn’t give a goddamn about her weight, but she did, and it took me worshipping her body, showing her, telling her, and keeping her fed to make her see that. Then there were times she’d talk down on herself, and I’d have to restart the process all over again. It usually happened after a run-in with Melanie, or a certain day of the year would hit and bring back some fucked-up memory.

“Getting there. Never been happier with Mom and her pushiness until today. Cristo, padre, she’s been put through the goddamn wringer,” I tell my father, who’s sitting in the living room with a clear view into the kitchen, where there’s more activity on a Monday than ever before. My parents could have moved into a newer house, they could have put in multiple upgrades throughout the years, and I’ve even offered them a place in my building. They’ve always said no, whether it’s because of their stubborn pride or Mom’s insistence that if it’s not broken, you don’t fix it. She doesn’t elaborate, and I know enough to not push the subject.

“And yet, she’s still standing. As for your mom, she’s tenacious. When she brings you into the family, she brings you into her fold. You knew that when you brought Winnie home.” Dad taught me a long time ago that you don’t bring a woman home unless you intend to keep her forever. I knew after one interaction with Winnie she’d be mine. Her witty banter, how she saw through my words and pegged me in under ten minutes. Then I took her home. The last way to know if you’re compatible is in bed, where she met every damn dirty need I could ever imagine. Winnie likes being dominated, she likes it rough and raw, and she has no problem giving up control.

“Glad for it, too. I guess I better join them, or I’m going to miss out on the food. Winnie told me that Sebastian is hitting a growth spurt. She can’t keep him fed enough without him complaining he’s hungry.” At the park, he tore through every last snack Winnie packed, drank all of his water, then a lot of hers, and promptly passed out. When he woke up, we separated vehicles and came to my parents’. That’s when I realized I made a crucial mistake. The minute Winnie parked her car, she flew into action. I’d gone to help, but she’d already had Sebastian out of his seat, and he ran as fast as he could to the first available tree out of sight to relieve himself.

I couldn’t help but laugh. Winnie looked from where he was taking care of business to me, shrugged her shoulders, and rolled with it. A boy’s gotta go when he’s gotta go.
