“Naw.” He deepens the kiss, pulling me closer awkwardly. “We’re cool, Immy.”

“That why you called yourself my boyfriend? Thought you didn’t like labels.” I narrow my eyes suspiciously. “It was legit you who said, let’s just keep fucking and forget about the rest.”

“One.” He copies me by ticking off his finger with another finger. “I don’t sound like how you just made me sound, my voice is much more manly and sexy. Two. I stand by it. Labels are trash. They mean shit.”

I frown. “So you’re not my boyfriend?”

He opens and closes his mouth, then yawns loudly and puts his hands back on the steering wheel. “If you want to call me that to make yourself feel better, I’ll be your boyfriend.”

“Don’t sound so dejected.”

“Dejected? New word of the week?”

I nod. “I’m learning so many.”

“Your brain is getting too big, Immy, don’t let it start oozing out your ears or you’ll leave for a college too far for me to fuck you in.” He restarts the engine and clicks his neck.

My heart flutters. “Is that your way of saying you want me to stay?”

“Don’t be a dick.” He pulls out into the road, checking his wing mirror just in case. “I ain’t your keeper, you can go anywhere you fuckin’ want. But all I’m sayin’ is. You want this dick, you gotta stick around. I ain’t leaving my dad to chase pussy.”

“To chase pussy,” I repeat, this time I’m offended. “That’s all I am to you? Pussy?”

“Hell don’t ask me that.” His hands tense on the steering wheel. “We’re not about that heavy, we’re all about the hot.”

“So you’re saying if a girl comes along that you like better than me, you’re going to leave me for her?”

“I’ve seen every girl in this town, Immy. Ain’t a girl here I like better.”

I punch his arm. “THAT WASN’T AN ANSWER.”

“Fucking hell, you don’t gotta yell. I’m right here.” I grab his hair and pull, ripping his head to the side, forcing him to pull over again. “What the fuck, Immy? Come on.”

“I am never speaking to you again, Kane Jessop,” I snarl at him, kicking open the door and slamming it behind me.

“Watch the fucking car!”

“Fuck your car,” I call, giving him the middle finger over my shoulder as I walk away. “And fuck you too.”

“You walk away from me babe, I ain’t comin’ back! I ain’t chasin’ you!”

I’m too mad to care. I deserve better from some guy who is using me as a pussy on hold until the line connects for his new bitch. “Kane Jessop, you’re the worst boy there is. Don’t chase me. See if I care. I’ll have you replaced by tonight and we both know it.”

“Like hell you will! Nobody in this town is dumb enough to touch what’s mine. Nobody.”

“I am not yours!”

“Like hell you ain’t!” He rushes after me, grabbing me around the middle, trying to lift me but I start pulling his hair again and slapping his chest. My feet drop to the ground and I keep hold of his hair. “You psychotic bitch. Let me go!”

Somehow he twists my wrists, forcing me to release his hair.

“Fuckin’ come here to give you a ride to your mee-maw’s and this is how you treat me?”

“I fucking came to your house to give you a nice morning’ only to find out I’m just your time filler until the next best thing comes by!” I shove his chest. “You’re such a dick.”

“That’s not what I said.”

“You implied it!”

“I don’t know what you want from me!”

“Tell her you love her!” somebody yells from across the street.

“I don’t fuckin’ love her for me to tell her that,” Kane barks back and even though I don’t love him either, his admission stings. I bring my knee up into his dick before he realizes what I’m doing and stroll away.

“Get it girl!” the same person from before yells and I continue on my own sassy and merry way.

“Such a bitch,” Kane rasps, cupping himself between the legs and groaning.

“It’s not like I did it hard, pussy,” I reply, only feeling a little bit guilty about it.

He doesn’t come after me and for some reason, I’m really annoyed about that.

“You’re late,” Matthew hisses when I enter the house, rosy cheeked and out of breath.

“I got into a fight with Kane.”

“Oh no.” He looks mildly concerned. “What happened?”

“They’re always fighting,” Poppy puts in. “It’s like foreplay to them.”

I put my finger to my lips, getting her to shush because Mee-maw has ears like an animal and she doesn’t need confirmation that I’m no longer a virgin.

“Mee-maw?” I call, kicking off my shoes and quickly braiding my wild hair. “Sorry I’m late.”

“Are you?” Mee-maw asks, entering the kitchen and narrowing her eyes on me. “Where have you been?”

“I was with a friend.” I move to the sink to wash my hands, a mealtime rule, and then help her dish up the dinner. Poppy and Matthew take it through to the dining room which is set up to the nines.
