Marshall looks at me, ignoring Kane entirely, “What is he talking about?”

“Don’t,” I beg Kane.

“He’s talkin’ about her mouth on his dick, minutes after you kissed her.” Ren starts laughing like this is hilarious and my eyes fill with tears.

“Thought we’d save you the embarrassment. She ain’t worth dating.” Kane winks at me. “She’s a whore, just like her momma.”

My fist hits him in the mouth before I even register what I’m doing and his head snaps back. Blood covers his teeth and trickles out the corner of his lips. I felt the crunch just as badly as he did. My hand is throbbing, but it was worth it.

I turn away from them all, enraged, wanting to get a gun and just shoot him in the face.

“Oh come on, Immy,” Kane calls after me and spits his blood onto the floor. “I was just playin’!”

“So she didn’t suck your dick?” Marshall asks him, sounding confused and I’m just done with men altogether.

Everyone watches me as I all but run away, but nobody says shit about what Kane just said. Nobody calls me a whore or insults my useless bitch of a momma. Everyone just watches.

“Immy,” Kane yells, chasing after me. Which is surprising, but not enough to make me stop. I leave the school which will probably get me into serious shit and head directly across the road towards the patch because it’s not like I can go home at this time of day. Mee-maw would flip her shit and she doesn’t use a meager slipper anymore to beat me with. “Immy, come on. I was just fucking with you both. I’ve called you worse.”

I turn on him so sharply he almost walks into me. “Why? Why can’t you just leave me alone?”

“Leave you alone?” He looks at me incredulously. “You’re the one that comes to me! It’s my bed you sleep in.”

“BECAUSE YOU MADE ME FEEL SAFE!” I scream at him, hitting his chest so hard my hand stings. “And it’s messed up, because you’re awful.”

“I’m awful?” he yells back shoving me in return. “I’m the awful one?”

“YES!”

“You’re the one who fucked me and ditched me seconds later… for another fucking guy I should mention. But I’m awful?”

His words make me falter. “It wasn’t like that.”

“Fuck you. That’s exactly what it was like and we both know it.”

“I didn’t realize sex with you was so sentimental.” I almost laugh at the ridiculousness of it. This is Kane fucking Jessop. He’s the biggest player in this school.

“You don’t realize a lot of shit.”

“Then enlighten me.”

“Okay, here’s one you never saw, the fact I stayed in that fucking store all night to save your stupid ass and you never thanked me for that. All you did was panic over the fact you thought you killed somebody. You didn’t ask me how I was doin’ and I was the one who actually fuckin’ played a hand in his death.” His voice is quiet but firm, an angry hiss through bared teeth. Blue eyes project his ire. “It’s all about Immy, Immy, Immy. As always.”

“You’re always horrid to me, how am I supposed to know any of this?” I ask, thinking back to that day and thinking that I took note of the fact he was wearing the same clothes as the day before. I also think back to the fact I never fucking asked him if he was okay. “We never had this conversation! And I tried talking to you.”

“Like fuck you did. You told me how you felt, begged me for reassurance and fucked off.”

Is he right? Could he be right? I wrack my brain trying to think of that moment. “Did you really stay there to save me?”

“Knew you wouldn’t listen to me,” he admits, shrugging nonchalant like it’s not a big deal when in fact it’s a huge fucking deal. “Heard him make you that offer, seen him lookin’ at you before the way a man looks at a woman he wants, not a kid. Doesn’t take a genius to figure out what game he was playin’. So I stayed, just to be sure, and I was right.”

I can hardly believe what I’m hearing.

“You saved me.”

“Twice,” he points out, smirking now, his anger gone. “And you still spoke to me like I was shit on your shoe.”

“That’s not true. We were both bad to each other.”

He smiles, a terrifying sight but also one so handsome and alluring.

“Naw… I was worse.” He steps closer to me. “I don’t know what it is about you that makes me so fucking crazy, but I think I figured it out the other mornin’.”

“You mean when we—”

“Fucked? Yeah.”

“And what conclusion did you draw?”

Grinning, he grabs my hair and yanks me so close the entire front of my body collides with his. “That you’re mine, Imogen Hardy, and I’ll stick a nail through the foot of any man that tries to touch you.”
