“Hi,” Winnie said, nervously. Her fingers tightened on the blanket.

“Hi, Winnie. I’m glad to meet you. I see you have Scythe’s blanket. I mean your blanket, of course. My congratulations to both of you. I’m envious. I’ve been searching for my Little for many years.”

“I’m sorry,” Winnie rushed to say.

“That’s sweet of you, but I’m sure she’s out there. I just need to keep my eyes open. Step into the exam room, and we’ll talk about what brought you in today,” Razor said. He waved them through the doorway.

They entered a hallway with several closed doors and an open area with file cabinets and a counter with storage.

“Go into room one,” Razor said.

Scythe opened the door into a regulation exam room. It was equipped with everything Winnie expected to see: an exam table, instruments, supplies, a scale. Scythe guided her to the chair near the desk. Razor sat on a rolling stool and opened his laptop.

“Do I call you Dr. Razor?” Winnie blurted and felt even more awkward.

“You can call me Razor or Doctor, Winnie. I’ll answer to both.”

She nodded and hesitated. Was she supposed to say something now? Scythe saved her.

“Razor, Winnie hasn’t seen a doctor in quite a while. She’s never been on birth control. We were hoping you could help us with that,” Scythe told him without a hint of embarrassment.

“Of course. We’ll do a screening for any communicable diseases as well to make sure you’re both safe,” Razor stated.

“I don’t need that.” Winnie rushed to reassure him. That sounded like a blood draw. She hated needles.

“It’s smart to have the testing done, whether you have symptoms or not, to protect yourself and your new partner,” Razor explained gently.

“What if there’s never been an old partner?” she asked and then blushed as Razor lifted a questioning eyebrow and turned to check with Scythe. Winnie seriously considered hiding under her blankie.

“I’m Winnie’s first and only lover,” Scythe stated, looking sternly at Winnie. She nodded to reassure him that was her plan as well.

“I screen the Devil Daddies regularly, so that means you’re both safe. Have you had a physical in the last year, Winnie?” Razor asked.

“Oh, no. I’m never sick. I’m a teacher. We’re exposed to so many germs every year. I think I’ve got super immunity.” Winnie rushed to reassure both men.

“No matter how healthy you are, Winnie, you need to have a doctor monitor your health. Do you have a primary care physician?” Razor asked, and Winnie understood he wouldn’t let her shy away from his questions.

“No. I never chose one.”

“If you would like, I’ll be glad to step into that role for you,” Razor told her.

“Are you any good? Can you take my insurance?” Winnie blurted. She’d never selected a doctor for fear of getting the wrong one. Her mom’s first physician had ignored her symptoms until it was too late.

“He’s excellent, Chipmunk. He’s patched everyone up in the Devil Daddies and watches us like a hawk. Heaven forbid you have a cheeseburger when he knows your cholesterol is borderline,” Scythe said.

“Borderline is still too high,” Razor corrected him.

“You need to work on that, Daddy,” Winnie told him and clapped her hand over her mouth when she realized what she’d called him.

“He does need to lower it. You can help him by hiding the cheese,” Razor suggested, not bothered by her use of Daddy.

Scythe rubbed her knee. “I’ve got a good reason to stay in tip-top shape now. I’ll pass on the cheeseburgers.”

Winnie beamed at him and linked her fingers with his, holding his hand.

“To give you birth control, I’ll need to examine you. Several brands are available and effective, but each has a risk. It’s important to match your health history and plans with the right medicine. The alternative is condoms and spermicide,” Razor told her.

Studying his face, Winnie reflected on the things she’d noticed about Razor. By the size of the waiting room out there, the Devil Daddies visited him often. She liked how he talked to her. Not in stuffy doctor verbiage but like he was a real person.

“Can you take my insurance?” she repeated that question. Teachers didn’t earn a lot of money. Covering an expensive exam could be pricey.

“Visiting my office won’t cost you anything,” Razor told her.

“Oh. That’s great. Let’s make an appointment,” Winnie suggested.

“We can do that now. I’ll step out and get the supplies we’ll need. Scythe, help your Little change into a gown. She’ll need to remove everything,” Razor said.

“Everything?” Winnie squeaked and tightened her fingers around Scythe’s hand.

“Yes. Would you like your Daddy to stay with you during the exam or wait in the lobby?” Razor asked.

“With me.”

“I think I would have had a tough time getting him out of here,” Razor said with a chuckle before meeting Winnie’s gaze. “But I would have kicked him out if you preferred that.”
