And God, did I want to fucking obliterate him.

“Trinity?” She jerked in surprise before looking over at me. I glanced at her before focusing back on the road. “When we get to Carla’s, say your goodbyes. I want to hit the road as soon as possible. You won’t be coming back until Zac is taken care of.”

She frowned. “How are we going to do that?” she asked, her voice small. I decidedly fucking hated it. She was mouthy and always sure of who she was. This wasn’t her.

It just made me want to turn around and beat the fucking shit out of her ex-fiancé. Damn him for doing this to the strongest woman I’d ever known. Fuck, I knew without a shred of doubt that she would always be the strongest woman I would ever know. What’d happened to her and how well she was handling it was proof of that.

“Don’t worry about that right now,” I told her. “You’ve had enough to worry about in twenty-four hours, okay? Just let me handle everything else. Can you do that?”

I could feel her staring at me, and it took her a good minute to respond. But finally, she blew out a soft breath and nodded her head.

“Yeah,” she whispered. “I can do that.”

Good girl, I wanted to say, but I didn’t dare voice it out loud. I kept slipping up and calling her baby as it was. She was under enough pressure without me blurring the lines of our friendship more than I already had.

It was hell being in love with a woman who wasn’t in love with me.

“Daddy!” my favorite person in the whole world screamed as soon as I got out of the truck. He was playing with chalk on the driveway with Dylan, but as soon as I hopped out of the truck, he was up on his feet and sprinting down the driveway as fast as his little legs would carry him.

I grinned and crouched, catching him mid-run and sweeping him up into my arms for a big, tight hug. He squealed and squeezed his little arms around my neck, clinging tightly. I pressed a big, loud kiss to his cheek, then set him back on his feet.

“You want to go with Daddy?” I asked him as he latched onto my hand.

Trinity eased out of the truck, wincing as she dropped to her feet. I shot her a concerned look, but she pointedly ignored me. Sighing, I let her be. If she needed to be stubborn for a little while, I’d let her—for now. Once we were inside, I’d see if the hospital had given her something for the pain, and if they hadn’t, I’d see if Carla had some Tylenol for her to take.

“Go home with you?” Wyatt asked as he began tugging me up the driveway toward Dylan, who was now on his feet and brushing chalk dust off his hands onto his jeans.

“Yeah, kid. You and Mom are going to come to my house for a long vacation. How’s that sound?”

He eagerly nodded his head and began jumping up and down. Turning to face Trinity, he asked, “Can we, Mom?”

She smiled—a real, genuine one that warmed my heart. The love she held for our son just fucking did something to me. “Yeah, baby. We’re going to stay with Daddy for a little while. That okay?”

He nodded his head so fast, I for sure thought he was going to give himself whiplash. “Yes!” He tugged on my hand. “Can we go get my stuff? I’m ready to go now.”

Laughing, I picked him up and settled him on my hip, striding toward the house. I could feel Trinity behind me, considering I was so damn aware of her, so I knew she was following. And I also knew Byron and Dylan were flanking her from either side to make her feel safe.

Once we were inside, I set Wyatt on his feet. “Go get your things together,” I ordered, patting him lightly on the back. When he was out of earshot, I turned to Trinity. “Did the hospital prescribe you pain meds?” When she shook her head, I sighed, seeking out Carla. I spotted her coming into the kitchen. “Do you have Tylenol?”

“Yep,” she said, popping the P. She walked over to the fridge, pulling a white basket down from the top. “Are you two hitting the road soon?”

“As soon as she takes some pain meds and the two of them have their things together,” I told her. She held out two Tylenol tablets to Trinity, who sighed but took them and headed over to the sink to fill a glass with water. “I want to be home before sunset, if possible.”

Carla nodded. “I’ll go help Wyatt pack then.” She patted Trinity’s shoulder as she passed her, heading for her bedroom where Wyatt’s things were probably at.
