“I apologize again. My brain isn’t working yet.” Caffeine would be necessary before I could keep up with his logic. “I’m sorry, pretty one. Give me a kiss.”

He liked that order, his face immediately lighting up as he sprang to his knees and carefully leaned around the cup to kiss me softly. “It’s okay, Owner. We haven’t talked enough about our rules yet. I should come over for dinner later so we can have a good conversation. We’ll do that after work.”

I just blinked as he’d somehow arranged our day.

But thinking about the schedule reminded me of my conversation with Roman. Taking a sip of the perfection he’d brought me, I tried to get my brain to work. “Roman wanted to get together this weekend, lunch or dinner…something like that so he could see the pictures we’re going to do on Friday and the ones from the weekend. You made him very curious.”

Emerson laughed, nodding and looking like he was ready to twirl around the room. “You want me to come too?”

Now it was my turn to lean over and kiss him. “Of course. I have to take my pretty doll. We’ll get you all dressed up if you want.”

His smile turned absolutely gleeful. “Can I wear my tiara too? Eli said it was very pretty.”

Eli.

Eli.

“That’s right. We sent him some of the pictures last night.” Looking around, I found my phone lying on the side table, plugged in, and everything. Picking it up as Emerson giggled, I saw that he’d even made sure I’d gotten up early enough too.

I ignored the half-dozen text messages from Roman and focused on my sweet sub. “Thank you for taking such good care of me.”

That got me a beaming smile and another kiss, this time on the cheek. “You’re welcome, Owner.”

Taking another long sip, I set the cup on the table and pushed the blanket further down the couch. “Come here, pretty one. Tell me what you’ve been up to this morning.”

Because he was entirely too cheerful to have just gotten up.

“Where did you sleep?” I looked around the room and frowned. “On my bed, right? Pretty dolls don’t sleep on the floor. That wouldn’t be taking very good care of my doll.”

He nodded, wide eyes looking wonderfully sweet. “Yes, Owner. I knew you would want me to be comfy and safe.”

Yes, I would.

“You’re such a good doll. Come here and give me my cuddle.” As he scrambled up in my lap, I chuckled and wrapped my arms around him. “I didn’t get that last night.”

It wasn’t until he was all smiley and snuggled into my chest that I realized he was just wearing panties and one of my T-shirts.

Kissing his head, I let my hand wander down his legs without letting myself overthink it. “We’re going to have to make sure we keep more clothes over here for you.”

Giggling and obviously pleased with the suggestion even though it was far too soon, he nodded. “I like wearing your shirts, but we’re going to have to make sure you dress your doll before you fall asleep next time.”

Yes, that was the only thing we needed to change for next time. “I will do my best.”

“I had to dress myself and that was very stressful.” His tone was so cute, I wasn’t sure how much stress was actually involved, but I wasn’t going to argue with my pretty doll.

I was reasonably sure he’d figure out a way to tell me that wasn’t allowed anyway.

“I shouldn’t make you stressed, you’re right.” Kissing his head, I smiled as he nodded and snuggled closer. “Pretty dolls need to be well cared for.”

“That’s right.” Settling into a topic he seemed to enjoy, Emerson petted my chest. “You have to feed them, and cuddle them, and dress them in pretty things, and give them lots of attention before helping them to make a mess.”

I couldn’t help but wonder what the order of importance was in his list.

Least important to most?

Most to least?

Random because that was how he’d thought of them?

Things he was mostly likely to get to ones he was skeptical about?

His logic was so fascinating it could’ve been any of them or something else entirely.

“Should we make a list tonight and work out what would make you happy?” It was going to be an interesting discussion and I couldn’t even begin to guess how it would turn out. “We’ll go over rules and expectations too.”

That got me a big hug before he kissed my cheek and wiggled around so he was lying on my lap and staring up at me sweetly.

I was immediately on high alert.

Danger Will Robinson was playing in the back of my head.

“You have to have rules and expectations too, Owner.” His wide eyes made me want to immediately agree with him, but I stopped myself when I realized I wasn’t exactly sure what he meant.
