Just like that, he walks off smooth as fuck. Only stopping to wink at me and nod as he moves by me to the waiting hearse he arrived in.

Dario

The roar I released when I watched that guy slap Carleen still rings in my head. I was in motion for the back door before I could think. I had to watch the tape back to see what actually happened in the time it took me to get outside.

By the time I arrived, Carleen was beating the shit out of a third guy I didn’t see on the cam initially. I still have a ton of questions, but the one thing I know is, Carleen was made for me.

Gio has played his hand, but it has given me all I wished for and more. I just wish my mother were here to see the rise of her son.

My phone rings and I pick it up. “Hello.”

“Dario, I need you to call a sit-down.” I don’t know what to call this man. He’s not my father. “Please, I can’t lose another son. You, Gio, Dante, and whatever head of the families you trust to help make this right. Can you make that happen?”

I grin. Kington told me this call would come. This is Gio’s next move. Apparently, Frances’s son and nephews, along with some other guys, have been going missing. His bloodline is about to be extinct. I guess funeral homes are a good business to be in. No body, no crime.

I sit back in my chair and lift my feet onto the desk, smiling broader. It’s time I play my part.

“Sure, I can make that happen. Bring your sons. I think they should be there. It will show good faith. You know, I wouldn’t want to find your father trying to set me and my brothers up.”

“No problem. He won’t be there, but I’ll bring the boys. You name the time and place, and we will be there.”

“I’ll give you a call.”

I hang up and text Gio.

Me: Your steak is on the grill.

Gio: Well done.

Chapter 52

The Successor

Gio

“I never meant for things to get this out of hand. My father is out of control. I’m pleading with you to understand my sons and I had no part in this,” Frances says. “I know Franky isn’t coming home. I’ve accepted that. Please, I can’t lose another boy.”

I allow him to speak as we sit at the round table in the back room of the fish plant that formally belonged to Gustloff. Having those bad shipments come through here served me well.

My youngest brother, Dante, is smart. I knew how he set up all the supply deals and the back doors he created if those fucks ever tried to screw him. I used that to my advantage.

Now, we have a direct line for our seafood, spirits, and dairy supplies and Dante’s drug dealings were cut as if they never existed. Clean, just the way I wanted, and I didn’t have to make him feel less than by making it all happen. He had a hand in ending all ties. His decisions.

Not to mention, this place is a great earner. The envelopes Dante has been kicking up from this place have lined Dario’s pockets nicely. When things turn over to me, he’ll still see a nice ten percent on this operation.

“They’re here,” Jace whispers in my ear, bringing me back to the reason we’re here.

I grunt and give a slight nod as Jace fades back into the background. Then I focus on the room around me. This is what all this was for. We had a score to settle.

Once this bell has rung, the war begins. Today we press play on a song that’s been paused for too many years. My dolls are ready, my doll master and curator are in place and my brothers are about to learn who the fuck we really are.

I’m no one’s pussy and my mother was never anyone’s bitch or whore. We are the Di Lorenzos and this is what the fuck we do.

The door bursts open and my mother, Ava Di Lorenzo walks in like the Donna she is. In all her dark-haired glory. I was getting tired of that damn red wig.

She lifts her gun and blows a hole through Jacob’s head first. Then she turns her gun on Louis and blows his brains out next. The sob that comes from Frances is so satisfying. After all, he was going to allow his father to do the same to me and mine.

My mother puts her gun away with a smile on her lips. I give her a nod, before I turn my eyes on Ny. I see the tears that shine in her eyes.

It’s almost over, baby.

“Hi, Frances. Good to see you,” Ma says. “Tell your father if he still has a problem, he can see Don Gio. My son, my successor.”
