I was alone with him. In a house. Like a couple.

Jason came in with the plates, and we sat down together to eat. The food was incredible, and it took a lot to not audibly groan at each bite. The steak especially was like none I had ever had.

As we finished, Jason took the plates away and came back with a couple of glasses and a bottle. I cocked an eyebrow when I saw what it was.

“Whiskey?” I asked.

“Only if you want some. No pressure. But I thought I would have a glass, and I wanted to offer it to you.”

“Are you big on whiskey?” I asked curiously.

“No, actually, but Carter is. He said whiskey was the most intimate of liquors.”

“Oh, did he now?” I asked, taking a glass and motioning for him to pour me some.

“He did,” Jason said. “And he said this one specifically would be the best one if I ever wanted to woo a woman.”

Jason grinned, and we each took a sip.

His cousin wasn’t wrong.

The heat between us was stronger than it had been even last night before I kissed him. I could feel it throbbing in my core. I wanted him. I felt like he wanted me too. And a couple more glasses of this love-making whiskey, and I was sure the both of us were going to lose the ability to hold back. If I kept up with him, I was positive we would end up tumbling into bed together before the night was over.

JASON

The conversation had been skating around the edges of flirtation all night but now was wading into the pool and dunking its head into the water. The whiskey helped, I was sure, but how much was up in the air. It didn’t seem like Beth Ann needed much prodding to get her into a mood where innuendo was more prevalent than not, but it certainly helped to have a convenient excuse.

The dishes were put away, and the kitchen was clean again, leaving us just to enjoy the evening however we wished. I had moved my chair closer to hers so we were sitting beside each other rather than across the table. The dim light of the candles in the dining room made her eyes sparkle as she spoke, and the shadows that played across her face worked to give her a more mysterious, sensual aura.

For my part, I kept getting closer, closing the space between us gradually until our arms nearly touched on the table as we leaned over it and spoke quietly to each other. The tension was so thick between us that I felt like I could slice it with a knife and serve it over toast.

It had been a relaxed date, something more laid-back and casual than the more formal kind that I was used to. But I didn’t want to think about those. I didn’t want to think about her. This wasn’t about her. This was about Beth Ann and how much I enjoyed seeing her smile. And how nice she smelled. And how sweet the whiskey was on my tongue and wondering how it would taste off hers.

Beth Ann shifted in her chair and looked vaguely uncomfortable. At first, I immediately assumed she was tired or bored and done with me, but her eyes never really left mine, and she didn’t skip a beat in our conversation.

“Would you like to go downstairs?” I asked. “It’s kind of like a little apartment down there. I have much more comfortable places to sit than a wooden dining room chair.”

“Sure,” she said. “Lead the way.”

Grinning, I stood and guided her to the door leading down into what was acting as my room. I led the way, and when I reached the bottom of the stairs, I gestured widely to the space.

“Welcome to my temporary abode,” I said.

“It’s pretty fantastic,” she said, looking around. Her eyes passed by the space where the couch and television were and settled on the bed. She nodded toward it. “That looks like a soft place to sit.”

I opened my mouth, inexplicably, to say that the couch was too and snapped it shut. Instead, what came out was a jumble of sounds that vaguely sounded like words as she brushed by me to sit on the edge of the mattress. Smiling dumbly, I walked over to the radio in the corner and cut it on. Soft country music began to play, and Beth Ann closed her eyes and let her head fall back as she smiled and kicked her toes in time.

“Would you like to dance with me?” I asked suddenly, the thought popping into my head and coming out before I could even process how silly it was since she’d just sat down.

Her eyes opened and settled on me, her smile growing wider as she nodded.
