“Maeve said in case she isn’t happy, and it makes for a bad working environment.” Eden tensed up and quickly pushed the velvet box to him, which he slid into his leather jacket as Maeve rounded the corner into the kitchen.

“Good morning, you two,” she said, and reached over to kiss him. “How are my two favorite people in the whole wide world?”

Doc smiled at her and pulled her in for another kiss.

Eden wrinkled her nose. “You’re my sister so I won’t be grabbing your ass.”

Maeve chuckled. “Where’s Razor?”

“He went to go and check on everything,” Eden said. “There are a lot of tourists this year. I overheard that all the hotels are fully booked already.”

“That’s like most years, though, right?”

“Yeah, I guess.” Eden smiled. “I better go and finish getting ready. Razor will be back to pick me up.”

Eden gave him two thumbs up, and he nodded in her general direction.

“Do I need to be worried? Eden was acting as strange as she usually does when she’s keeping a secret.”

“A secret?”

“I know my sister. What’s her deal?”

“I have no idea. I guess I make her nervous.”

He needed to tell Charlotte before he proposed to Maeve. Although, there was never a perfect time to propose.

Taking a sip of his hot tea, he winced at the taste. “This shit is fucking nasty.”

Maeve laughed. “You sound like my sister.”

Chapter Thirteen

The Easter Fair was hectic. Friday was always one of the busiest days, but then so was Saturday and Sunday. There were occasions they extended to Monday, but she hoped not.

Charlotte was amazing help, and with the few months of learning at beauty school, she’d picked up quite a few tricks and was taken with makeup application. Maeve kept an eye on her, as they worked their way through parents and kids alike.

The hours ticked by, and Doc would stop by the stand from time to time with coffee. He had come to realize she was a woman who liked different varieties when it came to her coffee. She loved anything with vanilla and chocolate, but she was also partial to fruit flavors and anything seasonal as well.

Wired on coffee, she got through the day, and by six, when the stall finally closed, she and Charlotte made their way toward the truck that Doc had brought them in. Doc was nowhere to be seen.

They loaded up their makeup kits, as Doc had left the keys with her. She knew he’d come to a new agreement with Sheriff Hayes, but the reason the fair always ran smoothly was because of the Chaos Monsters MC.

“I know Dad’s not here, and I’m happy about that, but I want you to know I already know, and I need to know you’re not using my dad for anything.”

Maeve’s mouth fell open, she was a little taken aback by the comment. “What?” she asked.

“I know about you and Dad. If I hadn’t seen you two making out, or holding hands and stuff like that, the gossip around town is already in full swing.”

She couldn’t help but wince. “That’s not good, is it?”

Charlotte shrugged. “I asked Mom, and she told me you two were going out, but I wasn’t to make any kind of waves, because she had already given her blessing.”

This was not going well for her. “Do you give us your blessing?”

“Yeah, of course. Why wouldn’t I? You’re amazing and I know my dad adores you. I can see it in his eyes every single time he looks at you. I think you’re pretty great. It does mean you’re my stepmom.”

Maeve gasped. “That’s right. So I can be totally mean to you now, can’t I?”

Charlotte laughed. “I don’t think you’ve got a mean streak inside you.”

She shook her head. “Do not be fooled. Trust me, I can cause some damage.” She winked at the girl. “But I happen to like you, Charlotte. I think you’re a pretty great person too.”

Charlotte looped her arm through hers. “So ... is it love?”

Maeve stopped and turned toward the younger woman.

“Do you love my dad?” Charlotte asked.

Her heart started to pound, and her palms had gotten sweaty. “I’m crazy about him.”

“Why do you look terrified?”

“Because I am in love with your dad, and what if he doesn’t love me?”

“I’ve seen the way he looks at you, and I know my dad. He is crazy in love with you too,” Charlotte said.

Charlotte looked past her shoulder and as Maeve glanced in that direction, she didn’t see anything or anyone looking back, which surprised her.

“I’ve got to go. Tell Dad he has my blessing, okay? Tell him I love him and he’s not to mess this up. You’re my mentor.”

One moment, Charlotte was with her, and the next, she was gone. Maeve watched the younger woman go, but then she made her way back toward the fair to find Eden sitting on a bench, eating an enormous hot dog. There was ketchup and mustard around her mouth.
