Was it true? Yes, of course.

There was a reason that Zander had made her wear a tracker for the first month that she’d lived in the bunker. She’d kept walking in on things that she shouldn’t have seen.

Like Ammo stepping out of the shower stark naked. And Zander and Keira . . . yeah, you get the idea.

“Those assholes all needed to learn how to lock a door,” she muttered to herself.

“Who needs to learn to lock a door?” Jared asked. “Us?”

Crap.

She stiffened.

She had to escape. She’d just knocked Jared Bartolli unconscious. And then she’d basically tackled him like a mad woman, rubbing herself all over him.

And now she was sitting on his lap.

Sexy, gorgeous, dangerous Jared Bartolli had her on his lap.

And. She. Stunk.

“Let me go!” she cried, trying to get away from him.

She used all her best moves.

And not one of them was one of the moves Ammo had taught her. Which was dumb, except she didn’t want to hurt him.

“What are you doing?” North asked.

“Obviously I am trying to free myself without hurting Jared. And in case it wasn’t obvious, I am winning.”

“No you’re not,” North told her.

“I am!”

“No, you’re not,” Jared added. “And what do you mean without hurting me? Do you have other moves that might hurt me?”

“Yes, I do! I’ve been learning self-defense. I’m practically a black belt.”

“A black belt?” North asked. “You do know that karate and self-defense are two different things, right?”

“Yes, I know that,” she grumbled. “But Ammo said I was really good.”

Jared tightened his hold on her. He grabbed both of her wrists and pinned her arms across her chest.

Drat.

This wasn’t a good position to be in when you were trying to get away from someone.

“Let me go,” she demanded.

“No,” he replied. “Who is this Ammo?”

“He’s one of Zander’s team,” North replied when she said nothing.

She was too surprised by the anger in Jared’s voice.

What did he have to be angry about? Didn’t he like Ammo? How could he not like him when he didn’t even know him?

None of this made sense.

“And he taught you self-defense?” Jared asked in a low voice.

Darn it.

Why did her body shiver? Why did she like the way he was holding her?

And why the hell hadn’t she showered or gotten dressed? Or run a brush through her hair?

At least she’d brushed her teeth so her breath didn’t reek.

“Angie, I asked you a question. And when I ask a question, I expect it to be answered.”

It wasn’t said in a mean way but there was definitely a firm note in his voice that said he meant business.

“Answer the question. Now.”

“If you know what’s good for your butt you’ll do it,” North advised.

“I’ll show you what will happen to your butt!” she cried, trying to push her way out of Jared’s hold.

Darn it, he was way too strong. And all she was doing was tiring herself out.

“What does that even mean?” North asked as he stared at her.

“I don’t know. It means that I’m going to kick your butt.”

“I am growing impatient,” Jared said coldly. “Stop talking at North. Stop staring at North. I want all your attention on me.”

Shit.

Shit. Shit. Shit.

His voice meant business. And she couldn’t believe that she’d forgotten who was the biggest monster in the room.

Sure, North might be scary. He might be deadly and dangerous.

But Jared was in charge.

“Yes, he taught me self-defense,” she replied. Why was he asking her these questions?

“Did he touch you?”

“Um, well, yeah. Of course he did. He had to correct my stance and stuff. Why? How is that important?”

“Oh, believe me, it’s very important. Add him to the list, North,” Jared ordered.

North nodded as though he knew exactly what Jared was talking about.

“What do you mean? What list? Actually, it doesn’t matter. Ammo has nothing to do with this. Shouldn’t we be less concerned with my self-defense moves and more worried about your head? Are you seeing double? Are you dizzy at all?”

“My head is fine. It will take more than a whack from you to give me a concussion.”

Hmm. Was he saying that she didn’t hit very hard?

“It was enough to knock you out,” she pointed out.

Perhaps unwisely.

“Yes, I haven’t forgotten that you knocked me out,” he said in a low drawl. “I’m going to start a list in my head.”

“A list of what?” she asked.

“We’ll call it Angie’s Naughty List. And on it are things that you have done for which you’re going to be punished.”

Was it her imagination or did North look extremely pleased?

Well, in North’s case, his lip twitched. It could have been gas.

Who knew?

“Ahh, no you’re not. Because in a few minutes you’re going to let me go. Because your crazy-ass-hippo-breath assistant kidnapped me and has kept me locked up for weeks! Without proper entertainment. I haven’t seen the outside. Do you know that I’m probably now deficient in Vitamin D? I’ll probably get rickets.”
