“Are you really the damn reaper, or did I imagine that?”

Devon smirks, picking up speed as we make our way onto the highway. “Oh no, that you didn’t imagine. I very much am, but as far as Brooke is concerned, she and I were never working together.”

“I don’t know what’s real and what isn’t.”

“That’s what your dad wanted, Isa! He wanted to fuck you up like that! Have you seen Brianna?”

I flinch at the mention of my sister’s name. “No.”

“Well, she’s a fucking Stepford wife. Like you didn’t already expect that to happen anyway. Divorced and re-marrying.”

“And the baby? She was pregnant with me, with Harper.”

“Yeah, a boy. He’s cute as shit.” Devon glares at me from over his shoulder.

“Damn,” I sigh, shaking my head and resting it against the cool window. “I really lost the plot there.”

Devon laughs so loud I find a smile on my own mouth. “Yeah, you did.”

“Also, in my dream state, or whatever it was that I was going through, you wanted to get me pregnant for some reason. I later found out that you weren’t there. We don’t know why I put you on the bad side of the fence.”

“Well, I mean, I’d still like to fuck you until you get pregnant. Does that count?” He’s joking, and it feels familiar, like home, but there’s still a sadness that seems to linger within me. One I haven’t been able to shake. “In all seriousness, it probably has to do with the way I make you feel. I don’t make you feel good things. We, you and I, we were toxic. We fucked, did drugs, and repeated. We weren’t good together. It makes sense why you would unconsciously place me in the dark, I’ve been there through all the dark moments.” I want to engage with him in this conversation because it seems a legitimate reason, but there’s one thing I have to ask.

“Why didn’t anyone save me?” My throat tightens around the words, as if my body is too stubborn to let the words go. To expose my vulnerability.

His hand rests on my thigh. “Baby. It’s not Bryant’s fault. Seeing you as Brooke was something none of us could handle. You never wanted any of us around. Straight up refused to see us whenever we would ask for you. Your husband may have connections on that side of the law, but your father had everyone on both sides. Even if we wanted, he wouldn’t let us through.”

I sigh, squeezing my eyes closed. I was so fixated on Devon’s words that when we slow down, I only just notice that we’ve pulled into Bryant’s long driveaway. “Oh Devon!” I yell, turning in my seat to face him. “Why are you bringing me back here!”

Devon pulls up the emergency brake and shifts in his seat. “Because you and he need to fucking talk. Away from the fiancée and away from your new toy.”

I smirk, pouting. “Are you jealous that I have a new toy?”

Devon rolls his eyes, leaning over to my door handle and pushing it open. “Get out of the car. Pain in my ass. Once you and he have talked, then we will talk about what to do from there, but as of right now, Isa, you need to be back on his lap.”

“I’m not a dog, Devon…”

He bites his bottom lip and winks. “Oh, but don’t you like it?”

“Fuck,” I grumble, stumbling out of the car while staring up at the mansion. This time with new eyes. Stacey’s car isn’t here. Actually, no cars are parked out front. The sun is setting behind thick trees, with an overlay of green from the leaves. I suck in a deep breath, just as the front door opens and my husband is standing there with a glass of whiskey hanging between his fingers and his tie loosened around his neck.

“Inside, baby. Time to talk.”

I didn’t want to ruin her. I just wanted to love her.

-Bryant

If I had the option to walk through Hell or go through everything that I have been through this past year, I’d run toward the gates of Hell.

Isa straightens her shoulders, and I can’t help but take in her body. I need to get her on my dick as quickly as possible. I need to fuck her, and I need to do it now. The thought of her soft curves bruising under my hand has me fighting the urge to throw her over my shoulder and dragging her upstairs.

“Husband.” She grins, taking the steps one at a time while keeping her eyes on mine. “Really, this is how you wanted to get me back here.” She pauses right in front of me, but just as she’s about to step past, she brings her hand to my tie and yanks it off. She bats her eyelashes. “Could have just called me.” She’s walking past me while tossing my tie around her neck when my hand catches hers in passing and I yank her backward, slamming her against the wall in the foyer. I can feel her heart beating against my chest, her breath on my lips. I press one leg between hers while keeping my hands planted on the wall on either side of her head. “Watch it, wife. You know how I get when I’m angry.”
