He was moving, thrusting up gently. His hand went into my hair. He fisted it, making me hiss around him.

“I’m sorry.”

God, we were apologizing way too much during this whole thing. “It’s okay. You can do it again. I like knowing I make you feel good.” There was nothing in the world like it.

He pulled my hair, and I kept sucking him, stroking him as I did, until he moaned, “Gage…oh God,” his body going rigid, his hand tugging my hair until it stung, as he shot his load into my mouth.

“Best. Birthday. Ever,” he said breathlessly.

I flopped down beside him. Jojo turned his head. I leaned close, then paused, unsure if he would want to kiss me after what I just did. We didn’t kiss the other times that happened.

He closed the gap between us, and our tongues wrestled, wanting. I cupped his face, one of my favorite things to do, and confessed, “I want you to do it to me next time.”

“Okay.” He nodded.

“What was it like?” I’d never thought about having someone inside me before.

“It felt like us. Like…I don’t know. You were a part of me, but you’re always a part of me, so it was just in a new way.”

I was still pissed at myself for not making him come, but we could practice. Next time I’d make sure to hold off longer. “I’ll be right back.”

I kissed him, then climbed over him and out of bed as my side was against the wall. I found my briefs, tugged them on, and went to the kitchen. I plucked the two cupcakes I’d purchased out of their container and put a candle in Joey’s.

I knew his father kept lighters in the junk drawer, so I got one, then made my way back to the room. When I got there, he was sitting in the middle of the bed with his underwear on too.

I set my chocolate cupcake down and lit the candle in his, before sitting beside him and singing him “Happy Birthday.”

He wore my favorite smile, the one that made me feel like I was the strongest man in the world. Like I could run across the country and not get tired, or swim the length of an ocean and not run out of breath. I was invincible because of that smile.

When the song ended, he closed his eyes and blew out the candle.

“What did you wish for?”

“That it’s always like this with us—the way we are in this moment, the way we are tonight.”

“Except I make you come when we have sex next time.” I winked, and he laughed.

We sat there in our underwear and ate our cupcakes, then went to the living room to watch a movie.

As soon as it was over, we were back in his bed. We didn’t add clothes or take anything off. Jojo curled around me and whispered, “I love you.”

“I love you too.” He was everything to me, as if the only reason there was a Gage in the world was because there was a Joey.

He fell asleep almost instantly, but I couldn’t. At some point he rolled away, lay on his stomach. The moon shined through the window, and I watched the light and shadows of the trees dance along his naked back. I traced the lines with the tip of my finger, but he didn’t wake up, just moaned quietly and let out a content breath.

There was nothing I wouldn’t do for him. Nothing I wouldn’t give him.

I didn’t know how long I watched him sleep, like some creeper, but I didn’t care. Eventually, my eyes began to get heavier and heavier until they finally closed, sleep stealing my time with him.

Warmth was suddenly ripped from me, Joey’s scent and body there one second, gone the next.

“Motherfucking faggots!”

My eyes jerked open, the light stinging them.

“Did you fuck him? Did you let that boy stick his cock up your ass?” his father shouted, pulled his arm back, and swung, connecting with Joey’s face and making him stumble backward.

“Leave him alone!” I leaped out of bed and lunged at him as he went for Joey again. His arm came back, his elbow hitting me right in the face. I fell but didn’t stay down long, lunging at him again as he hit Joey.

He was flailing beneath his father, trying to get him off. I tackled him as my world spun. My heart fell out of my chest, his father hitting it with each fist that connected with Joey. We rolled, and Joey moved away from him.

“Dad, don’t! Leave him alone. It’s my fault—Gage, go. Just go!”

His father didn’t care about me, though. Hate flared in his eyes, and he hit me once, then was gone, going after Jojo again—my Jojo.

I struggled to my feet. He’d rung my bell pretty good, but it didn’t matter. He grabbed Joey again. Managed to spin on me and push me backward. I felt…my hand touched something…cool metal, and I realized my bat was there, beneath my hand as his was around Joey’s throat, holding him against the wall.
