Vex dropped the fork, letting the utensil clatter onto the plate. He wrapped a hand around the back of her head and drew her forward. “We need to remedy that,” he said softly before nibbling gently at her lips.
Angel leaned in, eager to deepen the kiss. He tasted like their delicious meal and a flavor even yummier than that. His own special flavor captivated her. When he lifted his head, a faint sound of protest escaped from her lips.
“I know, Baby girl. I feel our connection too.” Vex pressed his mouth to hers again.
This time when he released Angel, he grinned at her. “So, can we share a fork now?”
A giggle burst from her. “Yes, Vex.” She reached for the last bite of hot dog and gasped when Vex popped her hand lightly.
“Daddy’s job, Baby girl,” he told her as he picked up the food. He held it to her mouth and waited patiently.
After accepting, Angel chewed and considered him. She didn’t understand what drew her to Vex. Sure, he was handsome and had a great butt. He’d rescued her from hell. But something even more ground-shattering seemed to link them together. She felt better with him around than with anyone else. Even Trevor.
“Whoa, Angel. What was that last thought?”
“Now that I’m safe, I should call my folks and….”
“And?” he prompted.
“My fiancé, Trevor.” She should be ashamed to admit she was engaged to marry someone else after kissing Vex, but she wasn’t. Did she feel so strongly about Vex because he’s rescued her, or was their connection truly more powerful than anything she’d experienced before?
Vex’s expression hardened. “Your fiancé? What kind of man leaves the woman he loves in that kind of situation?”
“Trevor isn’t like you. He’s more suits and cufflinks. Golf games and the country club. He couldn’t have gotten me out of there.”
“Do you love him?” Vex asked directly.
Angel stared at him before she said, “I’ve known him since we were kids. Our fathers are in business together. I think everyone has always expected us to get married.”
“So, no? You don’t love him?” Vex asked, making her admit it.
Was that why she’d resisted setting a date? Because deep inside, Angel had questioned how deep or shallow her emotions were toward him. “I care for him. I’d be happy with him.”
“You don’t love him,” Vex said, visibly relaxing. He offered her another bit of potato salad.
“It doesn’t matter to you that I’m engaged?”
“Oh, it matters. But I’m not worried about a rival who’s an old childhood friend when Trevor obviously hasn’t made you come so hard you scream and beg for more.”
She stared at him, processing what he’d said. How had he known that? Trevor hadn’t pushed her into bed. He’d pursued a lot of women over the years but had always returned to Angel. She’d dated a variety of guys too. Never seriously. Their parents always arranged for them to make appearances together at social events. Eventually, in the eyes of everyone around them, Trevor and Angel were the perfect couple.
Surely, he was exaggerating how responsive some women were. “Does that really happen?”
“Yes. When you’re recovered, I’d be glad to demonstrate.”
“Would it be okay if I called them after dinner?” she asked, easing the conversation away from sex.
“Of course. Do you wish to go home?”
Did he not want her with him anymore?
“Wipe that thought from your mind. I’m keeping you here.”
“Can you do that? I mean, if I wanted to go, I could, right?” she asked, panicking a bit inside. She didn’t question how he understood what she’d worried about but focused on her freedom.
“Sure. I can sleep on the floor by your bed or outside your window wherever you are. The Ravagers will take a while to recover from their burned-out MC headquarters. They will come after you, if only to prove that you can’t escape them.”
“You’ll let me leave?” Maybe he didn’t care as much about her after all.
“Of course.” He smoothed a hand over her shoulder before hugging her to his body. “You’re free to leave if that’s what’s you wish. The Devil Daddies MC doesn’t take hostages. I won’t allow you to go unaccompanied, nor will I let you out of my sight for a long time. However, we are not the Ravagers.”
She could see the outrage in his expression. “Of course you aren’t. Sorry.”
Vex picked up a burger. He offered the hot sandwich to her. “Eat, Baby girl.”
She took a normal-sized bite, and Vex devoured a third of the delicious concoction in one snap of his jaws. Chewing carefully, she studied him. Vex’s beard was slightly darker than his hair. She’d never run into a lot of redheads. His eyes were a beautiful shade of green with long eyelashes that women would kill to have.
“You’re thinking too hard, Baby girl. Have a drink.” Vex lifted the glass to her lips. He observed her closely.
