“I’m sorry for waking you up,” she said, as he went to the fridge. He was so big and tall that she didn’t quite see what he was getting out of the fridge.

“I don’t sleep.”

“Everyone sleeps.”

“I’m not everyone.”

She opened her mouth but closed it. “Oh, okay. Is there anything I can do to help you sleep?” she asked.

“A nice hard fuck would be nice, but I have a feeling you’re not offering that.”

Skye didn’t know if he was joking or not. The visual of being at his mercy, of being fucked by him, well, it didn’t repulse her. If anything, it highly aroused her.

What was happening to her?

Chapter Four

Galen was known for being the silent type. He got his jobs done with as few words as possible. Why did he have to choose now to open his big fucking mouth? His cock was instantly hard. He wanted to turn to see her reaction, but chose to just play off the words as if he never said them at all. Truth was that his little captive was constantly on his mind in every inappropriate way. He usually had excellent control over his needs and desires, but something about Skye had unraveled him.

He’d never had guests at his house, and now he couldn’t imagine Skye not being there. In the blink of an eye, she made him realize just how lonely and empty his life had been. But it was stupid for a man like him to consider impossible fantasies. Family and love were things meant for real people, not bogeymen. His entire life circled around death and destruction, pushing the limits, and putting everything on the line. Entertaining the thought of keeping the little redhead for himself was the dumbest fucking thing to ever cross his mind.

She never answered him. Not that he expected her to.

Of course, she didn’t have to tell him her body wasn’t up for the taking. The woman hated him. He’d been sent to kill her, and now he was ordered to keep her captive for the unforeseeable future. If anything, he was her worst enemy, not a potential bedmate.

He continued to cook in silence. Everything was too quiet now. Awkward.

“Where’d you learn how to cook?” Skye asked.

The words were the respite he desperately needed. He exhaled. “I’ve always taken care of myself. Learned a few things along the way.” This time he turned slightly to gauge her reaction. Damn, she was cute.

“No family? You look like the kind of guy who comes from a big family, you know, the kind who has those huge family meals with all the fixings.”

“You get all that from looking at me?”

She shrugged. “Just a hunch.”

“Well, you couldn’t be further from the truth.”

Galen had been on his own since he was a young teen. All he knew was survival and most of his memories were better left forgotten. Family was something on television, people playing roles. It wasn’t real. Not for him. Come to think of it, Galen could drop dead tomorrow and nobody would care. Not a single person had ever loved him. What did that make him? A monster? Maybe something worse.

“What is the truth?”

He turned around with the prepared food. Something simple because it was late.

“You don’t want to know,” he said.

“I do.”

“Why?” He set the grilled cheese sandwich down in front of her. She didn’t look nauseated this time. “My life has nothing to do with you.”

“I’m just curious.”

“Curious how a law-abiding citizen turns into a hit man? Never said I was a good man. Not now. Not ever.”

“You are.” She pulled the plate closer and began to eat.

Who did she think she was? He clenched his teeth and wanted to argue, to tell her she was a stupid fucking girl to think he could be anything but a piece of shit. Good men didn’t work by night, following orders to kill regardless of guilt or innocence. They didn’t keep women locked away until given the order to execute them in cold blood. She had no idea that her life could end with one phone call. And he wouldn’t hesitate, no matter how much it bothered him. No matter how much he wanted to keep her around.

Galen walked to the other end of the kitchen, rubbing behind his neck as he walked. The longer she stayed, the harder it would be to kill her. This wasn’t like him. He never cared about this shit. She was making him weaker by the minute. He tried to imagine Viko calling him and demanding he bring the girl in. It made his hackles rise. Could he stand by while his boss slit her throat? He shook the thoughts away. The anxiety creeping into his mind was unpleasant and unfamiliar. It was so much easier when he didn’t care.

On instinct, he pulled out his cell and dialed Viko. He needed answers. Needed some kind of reassurance that this could go two ways. Waiting like a good little puppy was not his style. He was already having mixed feelings, which was dangerous ground. Skye had to go before she threw his life completely off axis.
