I laughed at her statement.

“I’ll send some to work with you for midnight snack.”

She groaned. “If I get a break. We’re swamped all the time.”

I studied her, unable to stop myself from touching her. I ran a finger under her eye. “You are exhausted, iubirea mea.”

She narrowed her eyes. “What does that mean?”

“Buddy, friend, pal,” I lied smoothly.

She eyed me in disbelief and reached for her water, sipping the liquid. I watched her delicate neck muscles flex as she swallowed. The way she licked her lips, catching the little drops with her tongue. I wanted those lips underneath mine. Her tongue in my mouth. Her skin gliding along my own.

She was incredibly lovely to me. The perfect height to kiss. Her long, dark hair hung straight down her back, often caught up in a bun at her neck. Her eyes were a deep, rich brown, her skin looking as if she had been freshly kissed by the sun. She had a beautiful smile and, even more important, a beautiful soul. She was kind, funny, and caring. A brilliant doctor. Sexy as hell without even knowing it.

And unattainable.

“I don’t know if I believe you,” she replied. “It doesn’t sound like buddy, pal, or friend.”

“What does it sound like?” I asked.

“Personal,” she responded.

I stood, taking our plates. “Do not ask questions you do not want the answers to, my Sofia.”

I could feel her gearing up to argue, but she stayed quiet. Surprised, I looked over my shoulder and saw she was yawning. She blinked, shaking her head. “I ate too much.”

“No, you ate the right amount. You are working so hard. You need to rest.”

“You’re right. I’ll go home. Thank you for—”

She never finished her sentence. I had swooped her into my arms, and I was headed down the hall before she realized what I was doing.

“Egan,” she protested. “Put me down!”

I shook my head and carried her to my room. I liked how she felt in my arms. She did as well. I could tell by the way her body softened against me, nestling close. I laid her on the bed, pulling the blanket over her as she protested. I leaned over her, caging her in. “You are staying here.” I pressed the button beside the bed. “This room will be dark and quiet,” I explained as the blinds lowered, blocking out the late-afternoon light. “You can rest better. Your apartment gets too much light this time of day.”

She tried to argue, and before I knew what I was doing, I kissed her. The second my mouth touched hers, something inside me settled. She gasped as our lips melded together, moving in perfect synchronization as if they had done it a thousand times. I didn’t deepen the kiss but kept my mouth on hers in soft, light caresses. Then I lifted my head, our eyes locking.

“You will stay here and sleep. I will wake you later.” I drifted a finger down her cheek. “For me, Sofia. Please.”

“You keep saying please.”

“Because today, I need this.”

“You kissed me.”

“I needed that too.”

“We’re friends.”

“Yes, we are. We are more too, Sofia. And soon, we will talk about it. But for now, you need to sleep.” I pressed a kiss to her head and forced myself to leave her alone in my bed. I turned at the door, looking at her. Her hair was spread over my pillow, and I knew, later, I would smell her on my sheets. She watched me warily, and I smiled, flicking off the light, plunging the room into darkness.

“I’m here if you need me,” I told her.

Shutting the door and walking away was the hardest thing I had ever done.

CHAPTER THREE

Egan

I checked on her frequently. I told myself it was because I wanted to make sure she was all right, but the truth was, I simply liked to look at her. She was curled up in a ball, holding one pillow, her head resting on the other as she slumbered. One long, sexy leg was on top of the blanket, and no matter how often I drew the blanket back over her leg, she kicked it off. I ghosted my fingers over her calf, wondering how it would feel to have her legs wrapped around me as I sank inside her. Felt the heat of her around my cock. Heard her gasps of pleasure as I took her.

I had to leave the room before I succumbed to the temptation.

I let her sleep as long as I could, sitting on the bed beside her and running my hand through her hair. It felt like silk under my fingers, and I grinned as she blinked awake. She was sleepy and soft, smiling at me without hiding her affection. “Hi,” she murmured.

“Hello, iubirea mea. It is time to go to work. I made you coffee.”
