Rosa got to leave her house a couple days a week, and Luke and I didn’t have to feel bad about rendering her previous work position totally useless.

Enter Kit’s brilliant idea to host a holiday party. Rather, Luke had been downstairs with Rosa, just chatting, and he’d talked about caterers for said holiday party. Christ almighty, Rosa had about blown a fuse at the mere idea. No, no, she did the cooking for Christmas—end of story. Followed by cursing in Spanish.

But my mama didn’t raise no slouch. If Rosa was cooking, then so was I. I could handle some simpler items, like sides and bread. Hence my list. The party was the day after tomorrow, and I had seven side dishes to make, all of which—according to Rosa—would taste better after a couple days in the fridge.

“Daddies, I’m finished!” Kit yelled.

Luke lifted his forehead from my shoulder. “Then bring the trash here, please.”

I kissed my way along his neck, up to his jaw and lips. “We’re goin’ to bed early tonight.”

He shivered and kissed me back. “Ready when you are, Captain.”

Of course he was. My perfect cock-whore. “Fuck, how I love you.” I had to suppress a growl and the urge to take him right here and now.

“Oh hi, lovebirds!” Kit entered the kitchen and giggled at his own quip. “You’re cute when you dance.”

I smiled at him. “You can come take over for me. I gotta check the oven.”

He hurriedly got rid of his McDonald’s trash before he ran over.

I gave Luke a final peck and let our boy swoop in.

“Let’s just hug and sway, okay, Daddy?” Kit suggested.

“I think that’s a fine plan, my love,” Luke responded.

I grinned to myself and decided the rolls were ready to come out. I’d made an extra batch so we could have a few for breakfast tomorrow. And possibly a couple in a few minutes because, damn, they smelled amazing. They just needed some butter and jam.

“Did you have fun at work today?” Luke asked. “You couldn’t stop rambling about that…aircraft carrier or whatever it was, so I figured I’d have to ask later.”

Aircraft carrier or “whatever.” And that was the man I was marrying. Christ. Our boy had kindly bought two models of the USS Yorktown for us, and I was looking forward to building it.

“It was fun, I guess.” Kit shrugged as I placed the tray on the island. “It’s hectic right before a charity function takes place, so…”

I hoped he didn’t overexert himself. Kit had jumped right in, it felt like. Going from doing nothing and hiding from life to…doing everything at once. Now he was the assistant to some event planner at a family friend’s charity organization.

It was a part-time gig, though, so it was possible I was just overprotective.

Luke asked all the right questions to make sure the boy wasn’t shouldering too many responsibilities, and I listened on one ear as I continued ticking items off Rosa’s list. The mushrooms were looking good. Couldn’t really fail with a shitload of cream and butter, regardless.

By the time I was moving on to another side dish, Luke and Kit had sat down at the island, and I brought them a couple rolls, butter, and the apricot preserves they preferred. I was a blackberry jam kind of man myself.

“Heavens, baby—these are amazing.” Luke approved.

“Holy smokes, Daddy!” Kit too.

Full score for me.

Since I was planning on spending the next fifteen or twenty minutes slicing potatoes for a gratin dish Rosa was making tomorrow, I moved my workstation to the island so I didn’t have to have my back to them. ’Cause the way I figured, this was a good time to tell Kit about our wedding plans.

I seized the opportunity when their mouths were full of bread and preserves.

“I wov thiff fong!” Okay, food didn’t stop Kit from proclaiming his love for the Christmas song that started playing. Country Christmas song, to boot. I couldn’t be prouder. “Wing-a-ling-a-wing-ding-ding!”

I stared at him as he danced in his seat, this complete goofball with the most gorgeous, silly grin, and I couldn’t fucking believe how whipped I was sometimes. Was there anything I wouldn’t do to keep him this happy? I wasn’t sure.

Luke knew what I was feeling. I could see it on his face. He felt it too.

The boy owned us.

“You clown—Daddy and I have somethin’ to tell you,” I chuckled.

“Oh yeah?” He grinned and settled down.

Luke merely flashed me a smile, so I reckoned I’d do the talking.

I cleared my throat and began slicing the potatoes. “So we were talkin’ today at dinner, and I may have told him I wished I could call him my husband.”

The last traces of humor vanished from Kit’s expression, and he tilted his head, visibly confused. “Why can’t you? We can marry today, Daddy. That law changed, like, forever ago.”
