The guys had an early morning today, first with a team workout, followed by game film of yesterday’s preseason game and meetings, which means I didn’t see them before they took off. Probably for the best anyway. I’m not sure I could look Brock in the eye without blushing a thousand shades of pink.

By the time I finally went to bed last night, my dreams were plagued with images of Brock as he acted out the words he spoke in the hallway. I woke in the same sweaty, needy state I went to sleep in, which hasn’t helped much today. Fortunately, I’ve been alone, which has helped me get these raging hormones under control.

I lay my beach towel out on a lounge chair and slip my swimsuit cover-up off. When I chose a swimsuit from the few I keep at my brother’s, I admit I intentionally chose the yellow and pink two-piece. It’s not the same as the one I had years ago when Brock nicknamed me Sunshine, but with the yellow color, it did have a little weight in my decision.

After rubbing on a low SPF sunscreen, I settle into the chair and open my book, only to realize I’ve reached one of the book’s steamy scenes. After the night I had and Brock’s words replaying in my head, that’s the last thing I need right now, so I choose to skim that part and begin reading at the end of the sex scene.

It’s probably better that way for my mental health.

After thirty minutes of sunning my front, I position the lounger flat and flip over. Instead of reading, I close my eyes and relax, soaking in the sun and the quiet surrounding me. It’s a soothing feeling, your skin warm from the rays, the light noise of the pool water cycling through, and the faintest breeze kissing your body. It’s just what I need to help push a certain football player out of my mind for just a little while.

The next thing I know, I’m startled awake. The sun has changed, which means it’s later in the afternoon, and as I crack open my eyes and shift in the lounge chair, I can already tell my back is fried. “Great,” I mumble, dropping my head back down to my arm.

“Looks like you could use a pair of hands to help with the sunscreen.”

I glance over, shielding my eyes from the sun, and find Brock sitting on the lounger beside me. “I think it’s already too late for that.”

He tsks. “Day late and a dollar short, like always.” His eyes roam my body from head to toe, then slowly back up again. His gaze feels like a caress, one that leaves a trail of desire in its wake. “Your back is pretty red, Sunshine.”

I gingerly sit up, not liking the tightness of my skin as I move. “I think you’re right. I put sunscreen everywhere but my back because I couldn’t reach.” Glancing around, I notice he’s alone. “Where’s Caleb?”

Brock sits on the edge of his seat, turning to face me. “He was called to your dad’s office at the end of our team meeting. I’m sure he’ll be heading this way soon.”

Standing up, I stretch my arms over my head. It isn’t until Brock groans in what sounds like pain do I remember what I’m wearing. The now-familiar intensity returns to those blue orbs as he gazes up at me, drinking in my body once more. This is when I’d usually reach for a towel or my cover-up, but something inside me screams to be bold.

Let your inner seductress out.

Knowing his eyes are glued to me, I turn and head for the shallow end of the in-ground pool, a little extra swing in my step. Of course, I ignore the burn of the concrete on the bottoms of my feet. There’s nothing sexy about that.

I step into the water, loving the way it cools my flushed skin. When I reach the bottom, I’m waist-deep, and only then do I glance over my shoulder. Brock is standing beside the lounger, his hands on his hips and the faintest smirk on his face. “Coming in?” I ask, sliding my hands over the top of the water.

He kicks off his flip-flops and rips his shirt up and over his head, throwing it on the lounger. I notice he’s already wearing swim trunks, which makes me grin. He walks my way, like a predator stalks his prey, rounds the edge, and heads for the deep end. With one swift motion, he jumps in, making a huge splash that drenches me.

“Hey!” I holler when he returns to the surface.

His smile is so carefree, so happy as he shakes the water from his face and swims my way. I meet him halfway, finally dipping my top half into the warm, clear water. “The water is amazing,” I say, dipping my head back and wetting my hair.
