“Please don’t be mad at Hunter,” Tabby groans and lays her forehead against the cold tile while I rub her back. “I’ve never been able to drink. I’m pretty sure a newborn baby has a greater alcohol tolerance than me.”

“Then why did you drink so much?” It doesn’t make sense to me.

“It was the first time in a long time that I was having fun.” Tabitha gives me a weak smile. “Hunter is a hoot, and I didn’t want to be a wet blanket.” She barely gets the words out before her stomach rebels again, and I end up patting her back while she retches.

Once she settles, I carry her through the bedroom and all the way down the hall to my bedroom.

“What are we doing in here?” Tabitha lifts her head from my shoulder and glances around for a second before snuggling back into my arms.

“You’ll be more comfortable in here,” I tell her. Actually, I’ll be happier knowing she’s lying in my bed. “Let me take care of you, then we’ll call and check on my niece.”

My curvy little soulmate spends the rest of the morning napping. While she rests, I ask Rosita to fix a light lunch and arrange for Tony to handle today’s business meetings himself. I can foresee he’s going to be taking over more of my business while I concentrate on my Tabby Cat.

I’m about to check on Tabitha when my phone rings and I see Brendan’s face flash across the screen.

“Is Hunter alive?” I ask him, wanting to make sure my niece survived last night’s escapades.

“Barely,” Brendan growls. “I plan to have a discussion with her about knowing our limits once she stops throwing up.”

“Let me know how that goes.” I shake my head, knowing he doesn’t stand a chance against my headstrong niece. Poor fucker. What the hell? It suddenly occurs to me that I’m as pussy-whipped as Brendan.

“I’m sure it will go as well as your talk with Tabitha.” The asshole rubs my new circumstances in my face. And I love it.

My Tabby Cat has turned me from a lion into a mouse. Well, only for her. The rest of the world has to deal with the real me.

I’m sitting on the patio watching Bert and Ernie fight over a rope bone when the back door opens behind me. “Sorry to be such a problem.” My girl walks up behind me and leans over to wrap her soft arms around my chest.

“You could never be a problem.” I glance over my shoulder and breathe a sigh of relief when I see the color returning to her cheeks.

“Are you hungry?” I ask and watch her face turn pale.

“Please don’t ever mention food again.” She slides into the chair next to me and lays her head against my shoulder. “At least until my stomach forgives me.”

“Whatever it takes to make you feel better,” I tell her.

“Thank you.” Tabitha sighs and watches as the dogs run by barking at some poor little rabbit that made the bad choice to run through the yard.

“Anything for you.”

We end up spending the rest of the afternoon taking it easy so my girl can recover.

“I didn’t even message Mr. Winston,” Tabby laments as we watch television with the dogs. “About the seminar,” she adds. “That I missed today.”

“I let him know that you wouldn’t be returning to his employment,” I tell her, figuring she can’t give me too much of a fight in the state she’s in.

“What?” My girl surprises me when she sits up and glares at me. “You did what?” Her mouth opens and closes several times, reminding me of an adorable fish.

I lean over and give her a soft kiss before shrugging. “I’m not willing to let you go so I took care of your employment. I offered your former boss a deal he couldn’t refuse. He will release you from your contract and I’ll let him live,” I tease her and watch her mouth fall open. “Actually, I paid him to release you from the contract and told him you’re coming to work for me.”

“Work for you?” Tabitha sits back and places her soft hand against my chest. “What kind of work could I do for you?”

“I can think of several things.” I wiggle my eyebrows at her, unwilling to stop teasing her. “I’m pretty sure you still owe me a private strip dance.” I go all in.

“We can discuss a private strip dance once you tell me what work you have in mind for me.” My career-minded girl isn’t going to budge, so I end up explaining my plans.

“I’ve had a hard time finding accountants I can trust.” Have I ever. I’ve gotten rid of more accountants than I can count. If I even get a whiff of suspicion, I cut my losses and move on. My business is too important to trust with just anyone.
