“I’d follow you anywhere, too.” Our conversation is interrupted by Gallo and Marissa walking in. My eyes stay focused on Shae’s, watching as she rolls her eyes, controlling herself at the last minute before anyone can see her. It’s a known fact that most of the women in our office don’t like Marissa and Nadine. Fuck, neither do I. The problem is they’ve yet to give us a reason to fire them.
“Ready?” Gallo says, walking back in, going to the sink to wash his hands. Marissa moves near Shae, and I’m up on my feet. Her hand finds mine when I’m in reaching distance, and I hear Marissa let out a haughty breath.
“Yep.” Shae says, while reluctantly dropping my hand . I watch as she lifts up her shirt, tucking it beneath the sports bra she put on this morning. Then she proceeds to pull down the jogger pants until they’re below the now healing scars on her abdomen. The lace of her underwear appears, and I have to bite my tongue. I don’t want Gallo to see her even if the man is my partner and a damn good doctor. As for Marissa, I’d have much rather she not be anywhere near Shae, either. Soft, long, delicate fingers lace with mine, squeezing me to grab my attention. She must know what I’m thinking and how I’m on the verge of biting out a remark.
“Everything looks good. The scarring is minimal. Keep doing what you’re doing.” Gallo puts his gloves on to press around, watching Shae to make sure she’s truly not in pain. “Alright, you’re good to go. I’m clearing you for all activity to resume as normal. Your body will tell you if you’re overdoing it. I’ll see you in a year, unless you need me before then.”
“Thank you. I really hope I don’t need to see you before then, especially for something like this.” Shae goes to sit up once Gallo backs up, taking off his gloves. Marissa stays where she is. Not sure what’s going on with that. I also don’t usually linger in a patient’s room when they’re getting situated. I help Shae, untucking her shirt while she works her bottoms to a more manageable state.
“I can say the same. You can schedule your follow-up while checking out or set up an appointment reminder. See you later,” Gallo says to Shae before he turns toward me. “Later, Luke, see you tomorrow. Congrats on not taking over. Knew that would be hard on you.” This fucker.
“Yeah, yeah, see you later. I’ll have my phone, if you need me, but don’t use it.” We shake hands, pulling one another in for a quick hug, and then he’s out the door.
“I’m going to grab my keys and bag. I’ll meet you in my office?” I tell Shae. The room still isn’t cleared out even though Gallo is gone. Shit, this is weird, and now I’m going to have to make a concise effort to see if that’s normal or not.
“Yeah, I’ll be fast.” Shae takes my hand, using it to move off the table. I make sure she has her footing, and once she does, I make my way out of the room. A patient comes out of another room the minute I do, one of my own who we moved to Gallo’s schedule in order for me to take today off. Son of a bitch, I’m in a motherfucking pickle. I can only hope my patient won’t be too pissed, especially considering taking half a day off isn’t a normal instance for me. Vacation is about to be though; it's been years since I’ve taken a week off, and I’m seeing the need in my future immediately.
“Hi, Doctor Camden.” She gives me a wave.
“Hello.” I don’t recall her name, and I pull out my phone, pretending to be busy until the coast is clear. That is until I see the texts I’ve missed
Asher: Everything good with Shae?
Jagger: Girls haven’t heard anything yet. Pretty sure Luke’s balls will be in a vice if we find out before them.
Tysen: Ouch.
Trent: That’s definite.
I hit the lock screen when I hear movement behind me. I look over my shoulder to see Shae walking through the doorway with a look of annoyance written across her face.
“What a cunt,” is uttered beneath her breath, or at least that’s what it sounds like.
“Everything okay?” I arch an eyebrow when she jolts, noticing I’m standing there.
“Yeah, of course. Why wouldn’t it be?” She follows up my question with one of her own.
“You tell me.” Marissa walks out of the room with a smug look on her face. Yeah, I’m really going to have to watch out for that one. Especially if Shae isn’t going to tell me what happened in a matter of minutes.
“It’s okay. I’m going to go check out.” Shae places her hand on my chest. I know what she wants when she licks her lips. Fuck me, the last thing I should do is make any kind of public display of affection in the office. Too bad I’m breaking all the rules when it comes to Shae. I dip my head, press my mouth against hers, feeling the wetness from where she lapped at her pretty lips, and crush her to my body. We need to get out of here, and fucking fast, or I’ll end up taking her for the first time in my office.
