The truth of the matter is, I could have gone at it again this morning, but I woke up late. I’m also lying to myself thinking I can pull myself together without getting hard when I walk into her hospital room. Fuck, my cock is already as hard as steel. It’s like the damn thing can sense her out any time I’m near.

“Works for me. I’m sure another influx will hit us before the night is over. It’s baby season,” Lucy says with excitement. Between her and Ivy, I’m not sure who loves helping deliver babies more.

“That it will. Good thing I’m not on call tonight, and neither is Doctor Gallo. You’ll have the floaters.” Our hospital keeps two spare doctors on rotation. Without them, I’d be dead meat.

“Oh goodie.” She claps her hands together, rubbing them, most assuredly plotting to get her way.

“Don’t go too hard on them.” I wrap my knuckles on the counter and head to Shae’s room. She’s close to the nurses’ station, a good thing in her case, bad for mine. A few steps later, and I’m at Shae’s door, my hand is up and ready to knock, when I take a moment to compose myself.

“Oh, hi, there, Luke. What are you doing here?” Lennie asks, barreling through it.

“Are you here to check on Shae?” Lyric follows her lead.

“Hi, girls, checking on my patient. What are you doing here? Shouldn’t you be at home resting, per your husband’s demands?” Asher is going above and beyond with his crazy antics with her so close to her due date. It’s also their first child. He’s naturally worried, whereas Lennie took care of her sister growing up and isn’t nervous at all.

“Don’t remind me. We’re leaving now. See you Sunday.” Lennie gives me a hug, and I place a kiss on her cheek.

“We’re getting food, then I’m dropping her off with Kenny before going to the studio. Try not to worry, Doc,” Lyric teases, then we do the same, a quick hug and kiss on her cheek.

“It’s not me you have to worry about. See you guys,” I reply as I slowly open the door to Shae’s room, leaving it that way since I don’t have a nurse with me.

SHAE

I’d recognize that voice anywhere. It’s amazing what senses you develop when it comes to the attraction of another human. The girls were talking on their way out, and at first, I had no idea who they could be talking to, until I heard his deep velvet cadence. It’s powerful, rich with quiet confidence; it’s a voice that wraps around you, making you feel safe and secure.

“Miss. Parker, is it okay to come in?” Luke Camden asks as he walks through the doorway, carrying himself in a way that exudes male dominance. It’s practically dripping from every pore of his body.

“Yes, and please, call me Shae.” I attempt to tame the fly-aways that are springing every which way since I tousled with the pillow this morning, struggling to get comfortable.

I’m unprepared to see him in the flesh again. Luke stands with easy confidence, the kind that comes from knowing his own strengths and weaknesses.

“Doctor Camden, Doctor Gallo had a family emergency, unfortunately.” He pulls his hand away from the dark charcoal fabric of his pants. I can see the small peek of tattoos that trail down to his wrist. The tablet in his hand is placed on the rolling cart, and I allow myself to continue my perusal.

Every inch of his body is sculpted with muscle; whether it’s from hours at the gym or working with his hands on his off time, I have no idea. All I know is I’d like a front row seat to the show he’d likely give for free. Broad shoulders taper into a lean waist, and the tone of his skin is a warm bronze; I’d see more of it if it weren’t for the damn doctor’s coat he’s wearing. It’s obstructing my view from every flex and pull as he moves. As it is, his shirt pulls taut across his chest. My eyes flicker downwards, firmly locking on his belt, along with a sizeable bulge. I should not be thinking about a man’s cock while in the hospital, especially since I’m out of commission for up to six weeks. Plus, who even knows if this man remotely thinks the same way I am? And who could blame him if he doesn’t?

In the state I’m in, hospital gown, no makeup, a swollen mess from pretty much head to toe, and feeling sorry for myself.

The clearing of his throat has me lifting my gaze upward. Apparently, finishing my perusal of the rest of his body will have to wait.

“Um, obviously, you know who I am already. Is there any chance the lab results came back?” I ask. This has been heavy on my mind since Doctor Gallo brought it up after surgery. At first, I was groggy, still coming out of it, but once the cogs cleared my brain, realization set in. He asked me a few questions, mostly about who he should tell. I told him no one. I’d handle the news first once I found out. My family has already been through enough, and I didn’t want them to worry unnecessarily.
