She was nervous as hell, and all of this had come about because she had put her hand on her stomach. Who would have thought such an innocent action would cause this?
“Yes,” she said.
Isabella wouldn’t want to hear about her nerves. This was ... huge. She tried not to panic as they left the poolroom and made their way back into the house.
Adelina changed into a pair of pants and shirt, along with a jacket. She didn’t know how Isabella did it, but she was already waiting by the front door, complete with a cell phone in her hand.
There was no point in putting off the inevitable. She needed to know if she was pregnant or not. Following Isabella out to the car, the guard opened the rear passenger door, and Isabella sat in the back. Adelina looked at the house, and then took a deep breath, as she climbed into the back of the car.
“This is so exciting. Phil, take us to the nearest pharmacy, please,” Isabella said.
“Yes, Miss Salvatore.”
They were reversing out of their parking spaces, and then onto the main driveway and into the main road. With every second that passed, Adelina felt a little sicker. What if she was pregnant? Would Massimo be happy?
“Adelina, are you okay?” Isabella asked.
“Yeah, I’m fine. Massimo and I haven’t talked about this. Kids, and having babies.”
“You both know that is what was going to happen,” Isabella said. “When I finally find the one for me, I want a dozen kids. I want a large family.”
“You do?”
“Yeah, I love that it is me, Dad, and my brother, but I know Mom wanted more kids. She got sick with me, and it was a rough pregnancy, which was why they didn’t have any more after me. I don’t know, I watch all those movies with large families and I see all the drama and the chaos unfold, and I can’t help it, I love it. I know that probably makes me a little unhinged, but I love it.”
Adelina smiled. “It sounds kind of great. Not the drama, but a large family.”
“It is.” Isabella sighed, then reached over and put a hand on her stomach. “And you’re starting that next generation.”
She put her hand on top of Isabella’s.
“Massimo is going to be so happy.”
They arrived at the pharmacy, and Phil brought the car to a stop, parking it in front.
Isabella attempted to convince Phil to stay in the car, but the guard wasn’t having any of it, so they all entered the pharmacy.
Adelina noticed the woman behind the counter looked a little nervous. “Where are the pregnancy tests?”
“Aisle two,” she said.
“Thank you.”
With Isabella at her side, she made her way to aisle two, and looked at the long line of pregnancy tests.
“Wow,” Isabella said. “I had no idea there were so many different kinds.”
“Me neither.”
She looked at each package and the truth was, she didn’t have a clue which one was the best.
“What about this one?” Isabella asked.
It was one that promised the right result.
“Yeah, let’s get that one.”
“Do you think you need one to tell you if it’s a boy or girl?” Isabella asked.
“I don’t think they do that, do they? I thought that was the point of the ultrasound.”
“I don’t know. I mean, would your pee be able to detect if it was a boy or girl?”
Adelina chuckled as did Isabella, and then the gunshot ricocheted through the shop.
“Get down!” Phil yelled toward the two of them.
She looked toward where the woman had been behind the counter, only she saw blood spatter on the wall behind her.
“What do we do?” Isabella asked.
“I don’t know.”
They started to crawl down the aisle, so they were far from the window, and Adelina looked around the corner, just as Phil got hit.
“Run!” Phil yelled.
Getting to her feet with Isabella in front of her, they took off to the back of the store. A couple of the pharmacy staff were crouching behind a counter, and she saw a door with the EXIT sign up ahead.
“Let’s go.”
They didn’t have a whole lot of time, and as she pushed that door open and she and Isabella ran out of the back, she came face to face with someone she never thought she would have to worry about again.
“Hello, Adelina,” Diego Bruno said.
She didn’t get a chance to speak or argue as he punched her in the face, hard, and everything went black.
Chapter Eleven
“What do you know about someone taking over the Russo Mafia?” Vincent said.
This was not quite how Massimo intended to ask the question but his father always had different methods. They were not the same.
Vigo smiled. “Ah, so you can confirm there is unrest in the Russo Mafia?”
“There is no such thing,” Massimo said.
“Just speculation,” Vigo said, looking from him to Vincent and back again.
“What is your connection to Luiz Gutterman?” Massimo asked.
