Grunting, he got up and moved into the kitchen.

Well, maybe she was laughing at him.

But just a tiny bit.

“I told you that there was nothing much that could be done,” she complained as Jenna left her house later on.

“Better to be safe than sorry,” Renard grumbled.

He was so stubborn.

Jenna had told her that she’d likely pulled a muscle. She’d explained why she didn’t like painkillers in the house and thankfully, Jenna had a few stronger painkillers with her which Opal had taken. They were slow release so would last her through to the morning.

Jenna was going to send a script to the pharmacy for a strong painkiller in liquid form for Opal to pick up tomorrow morning before work.

Renard walked over to crouch in front of her where she sat at the small dining table. “I have to work tonight.”

“Oh, of course.” It was silly to feel so disappointed. She couldn’t expect him to spend all of his time with her.

In fact, she should feel good about getting some time to herself where she could do what she wanted.

Because Renard certainly liked to be in charge.

He kept bossing her around constantly.

Yep, he was so annoying.

And she was going to miss him. It was ridiculous. She shouldn’t feel this attached to him already.

“Want you to come with me.”

“Come with you?” she repeated, confused.

“Yes. To the restaurant.”

“You want me to come with you to the restaurant while you work?” she said, unsure that she was understanding him right.

“Yep. You might want to bring a book to read. And a blanket, in case you want to sleep.”

“How the heck would I sleep?” she asked, incredulous.

“I thought I could get a stretcher bed for you, set it up in a corner.”

Okay. The man had officially lost his mind.

“I’m not going to sleep in the corner of the restaurant,” she told him. “People are trying to eat! What are you thinking?”

“Didn’t mean in the restaurant,” he told her.

Oh. Oops. She must have misunderstood.

“Meant in the kitchen.”

Yep. He was definitely nuts.

“Not sleeping in a kitchen. Do you really think I could sleep in a busy kitchen when I can barely sleep here?”

“You slept last night.”

Yep. She had.

And that still surprised her.

“Maybe I was just so exhausted that I didn’t have nightmares.”

“You snored too.”

“I did not!” she exclaimed.

“You definitely did.”

Shit. Should she apologize? No doubt she’d sounded like a freight train.

“Cutest snore I’ve ever heard.”

Damn.

“You have got to stop saying nice things to me,” she told him.

“That was nice?” he asked, looking surprised.

“Yes. And you should stop it.”

“Why would I stop it?” he asked.

“Because you’re gonna make me cry.”

He scowled. “No crying!”

“These are tears of happiness not sadness,” she told him.

“Don’t care.”

He was so strange. A sadist who didn’t like tears.

“I’m not coming to work with you tonight,” she told him.

He frowned at her as he moved around the kitchen, opening cupboards and the fridge.

“You can’t stay here alone.”

“Yes, I can,” she countered as she stood.

He stood with his hands on his hips, frowning at her. “What are you doing?”

“Getting up.” She needed to move around.

“Do you need to go to bed?” he asked, moving toward her. “You should have told me, I’ll carry you.”

“I’m not going to bed.”

“The bathroom? Do you have to pee?” he asked as he reached for her.

She lightly slapped his hands away. “You are not carrying me to the bathroom.” Although now that he’d mentioned it, she did have to pee. “I’m going by myself.”

“What if you slip?” he asked as he hovered behind her.

“I’ve got a sore back; my legs aren’t broken. And Jenna said it was good to move around.”

“What does she know?” he scoffed.

Turning, she gave him an incredulous look. “She’s the doctor! The one you insisted check me over on a Sunday. Remember?”

“Still doesn’t mean she knows what she’s talking about.”

“Why? Because she didn’t say what you wanted her to say?” she countered.

“Exactly.”

She rolled her eyes.

But she made sure to turn away from him first so he couldn’t see her.

The man was terrible.

“I’m going to the bathroom. By myself!” She walked into the bathroom and then shut the door.

“I’m going to wait on the other side in case you need me.”

Yep.

She should definitely be happy about being on her own tonight.

But she wasn’t.

She really, really wasn’t.

“What are you doing?” she asked from where she sat at the kitchen table with another cup of coffee.

She’d managed to successfully pee on her own, even with him lingering on the other side of the door and now they were back in the kitchen.

“Making a grocery list. You have no food.”

Oh, so that’s what he’d been doing looking in all the cupboards earlier.

“I have food!” she protested.

“What? And where?” he asked.

“There’s coffee, bread, and creamer.”

He moved to stand on the other side of the table, frowning down at her. “Coffee and creamer aren’t food.”
