The key rests in the ignition and my nerves become recklessly wild in the bottom of my gut as I turn the key and kick over the engine. It takes precious seconds that I don’t have, and as I release the brake and put the car into drive, I glance into my rearview mirror to find Roman barreling after me, the stairs long behind him.

“FUCK.”

I hit the gas and take off like a fucking raging lunatic. The tires screech on the wet pavement and I quickly lose control as the back tires skid out to the side. Roman stops behind me and just when I think I’ve made the perfect getaway, I glance into my rearview mirror one last time and watch with horror as Roman pulls a gun.

Laying onto the gas, the car jolts forward and I struggle to maintain control. “No, please. NO,” I cry, my eyes filled with unshed tears.

BANG!

A loud pop echoes through the night as Roman’s bullet pierces through my back tire. The car skids and quickly breaks into an uncontrollable spin before hitting the edge of the driveway and launching into the sky.

I scream out, my hands slamming against the door to try and brace myself as it flips once, twice then three times before finally coming to a smoking stop on the manicured grass.

Blood pours from my head as a horrendous pain tears through my stomach. My vision blurs and black spots threaten to blind me but my fight isn’t over yet. I blink, my head spinning as I glance down to the thick shard of glass protruding from my stomach.

“No,” I cry, blinking into the dark and quickly realizing that the whole fucking car is crushed around me, upside down and leaving me absolutely no escape. My hand presses against my stomach, trying to hold the shard of glass still as my elbow slams against the broken window beside me, clearing a path.

Grabbing hold of the window frame, I pull myself out of the wreckage and scramble out onto the grass, sharp cries of pain tearing from deep in my throat. The car headlights shine back toward the castle as I hear the distant sound of a wolf’s loud howl.

Roman stands in the light, the gun hanging loosely at his side as he slowly stalks toward me, his eyes silently telling me that I am out of chances. I scurry back on the grass, the protruding glass making it nearly impossible to move away as blood pours from my stomach. “No,” I cry, violently shaking my head as he approaches the wrecked car. “I didn’t do it. It wasn’t me.”

Step by step, my life quickly fades out of my reach.

His expression hardens, betrayal thick in his eyes as I pull back just a little bit more, the rain pouring down around me and washing the blood down the side of my face. “Please,” I beg. “It wasn’t me.”

One final step and he stands above me, and with fire burning in his eyes, he raises the gun.

“ROMAN. NO.”

BANG!
