I did. As I tasted this piece of heaven, all I could think of was you. My mouth was filled with sweetness, with a slight edge of bitterness.

He told me to make a wish…

Love, your Jett

I drop the letter, grab the last piece of chocolate, which I brought to my room, and close my eyes as I pop it into my mouth. It tastes exactly like what he wrote.

This is who we are.

Sweetness and ecstasy, tested by bitterness. Do I dare wish for something that has the potential to be my downfall?

Do I?

I take a breath as I wish, then open my eyes, reaching for the next envelope.

Raven,

I’ve never had to win someone. I’ve never had to fight for someone. But I do for you. I saw these bloodred roses and they made me think of you.

My heart bleeds red, but only for you.

Love, your Jett

I rip open another.

Raven,

I will spoil you every day, for all our days.

Love, your Jett

“Oh my God.” I cover my mouth, drop the letter, and reach for the Tiffany box. Jerking the ribbon off, I open it.

“Jesus, Jett.” I stare at the sapphire-and-diamond choker, then scan the area around my bed to find the letter that goes with it.

Raven,

I had a vision.

I saw sapphires spilling all over you, running down your breasts in a sparkling river of gems.

It was that vision, that second, that my life changed. I might not have said it, but deep inside I knew.

You are my forever.

Love, your Jett

Forever.

I look around. “What do I do?” I whisper. Grabbing the choker, I run to the bathroom, rip off my T-shirt, and put the necklace on. It’s cool on my skin. I take a step back, so I can see more of myself.

It’s like this necklace has branded me, chained me to him, our souls intertwined together. To be honest, the letters mean more to me than any of the gifts. It has never been about money; it’s about trust. Can I really trust him not to hurt me again?

“Can you trust yourself?” I whisper, because that’s what all this is boiling down to. I lost a piece of myself that night, seeing him in a way I never thought possible.

What does your gut say?

I walk over and turn the shower on, removing the choker. Slowly, I wash myself while my mind tries to work through all this. He’s not messing around. He wants it all. Can I give him that? I deserve it, and so does he.

I turn the water off and step out, wrapping a towel around my chest.

Do you dare?

It rings in my head, and I freeze. Suddenly I can breathe again. It doesn’t have to be this difficult, Raven. He asked this question in the beginning, and your answer is still the same. It will always be the same. Because at the end of the day, he’s right.

There is no choice. He is my forever, and I am his.

“Holy fuck.” I almost trip over a pile of clothes trying to get to my phone on the bed. Jesus, my hands are shaking as I start to text.

ME: Are you free?

Exhaling, I wait.

JETT: Only for you.

My mouth twitches as I type.

ME: I need to talk

JETT: I’ll be there in ten.

JETT

I knock on her door. It’s been a week since the hotel room incident. I left her alone, gave her space, and waited for this very text.

Not gonna lie; it hasn’t been easy, but I knew if I was ever going to get her to actually hear me, I needed to give her space.

I’ve thought about myself a lot, trying to figure why I am the way I am. Which is bullshit at the end of the day. We can’t change the past, but we can change the future.

And my future is her. Do I delude myself thinking everything is going to be easy and perfect? No, but that’s okay, because that’s our journey.

“Coming,” she calls out and swings the door open. Seeing her stand there in a pale-yellow dress, her wet hair pushed back from her exquisite face and hanging long down her back, my heart aches.

But it’s her eyes that capture me, rendering me speechless as she looks up at me and I know she’s ready.

“Hi,” she says on an exhale. Her cherry red lips curve into a smile.

“Let’s take a walk on the beach. I have something for you.” My eyes caress her face, and I barely notice my choker on her neck. It seems almost dull compared to her.

“Okay.” Nodding, she steps out.

I hold out my hand. Only this time, she doesn’t hesitate. This time she takes it, and that electric charge that is just us—our energy—zings through the tips of our fingers up my arm.

“Jett,” she whispers.

Smiling, I shake my head and lead us down the hallway and out into the sunny day.
