“Okay, but that doesn’t just mean Dane will disappear. I promised to work with him, he has things on me, things that I’m certain he can probably use if he wants to. If I don’t give him something, he’s going to keep digging until he finds what he’s looking for.”
“Then you give him my guys, he gets in on this, he’ll bring a whole lot of fuckin’ people down. I’ll give him enough that he’ll stay away from you for a good long time,” Mateo tells me. “We have a deal?”
“Let me call my boss,” Beckett nods. “But I think we have a deal.”
Mateo nods, and then looks to me. “And after, my sweetheart,” he says as he leans in close, “I’ll have you in my bed again.”
I bite my lip, because being in Mateo’s bed was the best part of our twisted, fucked up marriage. The man could fuck a woman like nobody’s business and he knows it.
“We’ll see.”
He grins. “Oh, we both know you can’t stay away. You like how I make you scream.”
With that, he straightens and nods to Beckett. “We’ll be in contact.”
Then, he’s gone.
Well, this should be fun.

“It’s a bad idea,” Dane mutters over the phone. “You’re messing yourself up in some bad shit, Poppy. We had a deal. We’re going to stick to that deal.”
“Here’s the thing though, we’re not,” I inform him. “I’ve changed my mind. We’ll give you enough, I assure you of that, but it won’t be bringing Rocco down. It’s impossible.”
“Rocco isn’t just going away, Poppy. How do you think you’re going to get rid of him?”
I didn’t tell him that part of the plan, because obviously he’s going to stop it before it happens. I only told him Mateo has friends who are going to sort it out and I trust that they will and they’ll give him enough information to keep him busy for years to come. He doesn’t seem fond of that plan, but that’s just too damned bad. He doesn’t get a choice.
“I trust Mateo,” I say simply. “I do and I’m going to let the club and him protect me. You’re going to get what you want, in return for leaving us alone. That was the deal.”
“I could bring that club down tomorrow, Poppy. You, too.”
“No, you’re wrong. If you had enough to bring us down, you wouldn’t be making deals with me.”
This is a point Riggs made when we told him the new plan. Dane wouldn’t be working this closely with me if he had enough to take me down, or the club for that matter. If he did, he’d do so and he hasn’t which means he’s bluffing when he says he’s got what he needs.
It’s a risk, but it’s a risk I’m using.
It works.
Dane falls silent.
“I want to help you, Dane, but not at the risk of my life or the clubs. They’re helping me and I’m not going to hand them over to you. If you accept this, you’ll get the information you need. If you don’t, then this is our last conversation and you can do what you will with the ‘information’ you already have.”
He exhales. “I’ll call you back.”
He hangs up the phone, but I know I’ve got him where I want him.
He knows it, too.
“Hey!”
I turn to see Ramona walking into the warehouse with a coffee and a brown paper bag in her hands.
“Please tell me there is something delicious in that bag?” I say, shoving my phone into my pocket.
“Oh, honey, there is more than something delicious. It’s so good you’ll forget what came before it.”
I laugh and she hands me the bag. I open it to see a double chocolate cupcake with sprinkles and a chocolate poking out the top. She knows what a girl needs, god does she know.
“I love you, marry me?” I say, pulling the cupcake out of the bag.
“Me or the cupcake?” Ramona laughs.
“Both.”
She grins, sitting down and placing the coffee on the table beside me. “I snagged a ride with Adan, they were all coming out here for a meeting and a girl couldn’t miss her chance at catching up. So tell me, how are things going?”
I exhale. “God, you don’t want to know.”
“Oh, honey, trust me I do.”
I shrug and then spill everything that has happened in the last week, some of which I’m sure she’s heard about.
“Girl. What?” she shrieks when I’m done. “You slept with Remy and Beckett?”
“Firstly, why did you have to pick that out of everything I just told you?” I laugh. “And when you say it out loud, it sounds slutty.”
“Oh, babe, no. Nothing slutty about that. I could have snapped Remy up given the chance but he wouldn’t because he didn’t want to disrespect Adan. But man, if you have the chance at two bikers, girl, you take it.”
