“I am not a psychopath!” Emily cried.
Everyone gave her a look that said they disagreed. Maya had to hide her smile.
David looked like he was wishing that he’d never left his office. Unsurprising. He liked to be the big man making all the decisions. But he had no idea how to deal with conflict.
“Well, Davy!” Regan whined. “What are you going to do?”
“I’m going to go and get my hand X-rayed!” Jenni said as she attempted to get up.
No one moved to help her. Which Maya thought said a lot about her friends.
“I didn’t break your hand,” David said.
“You might have!” Jenni said as she finally got on her feet. “Prepare to hear from my lawyer.”
David went pale and started chasing after Jenni.
Emily and Regan glanced around at all the other women. Emily finally let out a huff. “This class is pathetic anyway. There’s a better one at the gym across town. See how long you stay in business when we tell all of our friends the way you’ve treated us.”
“Yeah, I doubt you have any other friends so I’m not really worried,” Maya replied dryly.
Regan glared at her and followed Emily out.
Cameryn started clapping and everyone else followed suit. Millie looked at them all in surprise as they smiled at her and Mr. Fluffy, who had slumped back down in the doorway.
“We’ve been hoping the bitchy besties would leave for ages,” Tegan explained.
“They’re so painful,” Ally added.
“Never thought to bring a dog in,” Cameryn said. “Or I would have brought in Spotty ages ago. Of course, he’d probably have spent the entire class farting and made everyone’s eyes water.”
Millie bit her lip, looking concerned. “Yes, I’ll apologize in advance in case Mr. Fluffy fluffs. He’s been known to clear a room very quickly.”
Livvy nodded. “He sure has. But he’s also a good boy, aren’t you, Mr. Fluffy? And you’re not F-A-T like that mean woman said.”
Maya crouched and patted the dog’s head. He really was enormous. Mr. Fluffy seemed a strange name for him. He should be called Ranger or Ammo or Herman the Humongous. Yeah, that would be an excellent name for this dog.
“You’re a handsome boy, aren’t you, Mr. Fluffy?” Unfortunately, she couldn’t spend all day admiring him and had to run a class so she stood and clapped her hands. “All right, let’s get going. And you’re all going to get a free class to make up for the late start.”
Everyone smiled and nodded except Millie who appeared worried. Maya winked at her to let her know that she wasn’t annoyed or upset.
And the woman smiled back before rolling out a yoga mat that had dinosaurs all over it. Maya was beginning to see the pattern here.
She liked it.
“Maya?”
She turned at the end of class to find Livvy and Millie standing behind her, big smiles on their faces.
Maya grinned back. “So glad you could make it, Livvy!”
Millie’s smile dropped a bit. “Bet you wish I had stayed at home, huh? Or that I’d left Mr. Fluffy there.”
“Are you kidding?” she exclaimed. “Did you not see how happy everyone was after the bitchy besties left? They’re awful and they’re always like that. Self-entitled and rude. No one is sad that they’re gone.”
“But you won’t get into trouble with your boss, will you?” Millie asked.
“Don’t worry about Davy,” she said with a sneer. “This job is just temporary anyway.”
Until she found a way to stop the puppy yoga. All right, so it was cute and fun. But she didn’t trust David and some of those puppies looked sad and young.
“Are you sure?” Millie asked. “I could get Spike to come talk to him if there’s a problem.”
Livvy gave Millie a slightly alarmed look. “Not sure bringing in Spike is a good idea.”
“Why not?” Millie asked.
“Um, he’s not exactly diplomatic,” Livvy told her.
“Of course he is!” Millie defended the mystery Spike. “He knows what he wants and he makes it happen.”
“Right, however he needs to. He’s a bit like Sav,” Livvy explained to Maya. “Except even quieter. He’s very, um, well . . .”
“Bossy?” Maya guessed from what she knew of Sav. She’d only met him a few times, but he’d made an impression. “Alpha? Possessive? Protective?”
“Yes,” Millie said.
Yes?
“He’s all of those things,” Millie added.
“Right. Which is probably why we should leave Spike out of this if we can,” Livvy told her.
Millie shrugged. “Sure, if you say so. But let me know if you get into trouble, okay?”
“Sure,” Maya lied.
“Got time for a coffee?” Livvy asked.
“Absolutely. I don’t have another class until after lunch. Just let me get my stuff and I’ll meet you outside.”
She rushed into the staff room and grabbed her handbag out of her locker. As she turned, she held back a cry as she saw David standing just behind her.
“David! What the hell are you doing?” she asked.
