I gave her what I hoped was a steely look but was probably disgruntled, sullen. “Yes. There really was spaghetti coming out of my nose. But, by God, I handed that mother her baby. I think there might still be a picture floating around somewhere.”
“Oh yes, there is.” Nadine nodded eagerly. “I’ve got it on my phone if you want me to share it with you.”
“All right, I give up! You win!” There was no way I could keep a straight face anymore. “That was the funniest moment in my medical career. We all made fun of me. Including myself.”
“That’s what I was told. It sounded like you got along with all your coworkers.”
“I did.” I sobered slightly, a smile still on my face at the fond memories. “I honestly never thought I’d ever come close to being as happy as I was during that time in my life.” I kissed the top of her head. “But this moment right here? It trumps all of them. My brothers. My woman. Me. All of us sharing a laugh. You made this happen, Nadine. I’d have come home and been fine. But having you with me now is the very best thing to ever happen to me in my whole entire life.”
“Wow.” She cleared her throat. “That’s, um, a lot of words.”
“And she’s still giving me shit.”
“Tell me you don’t love it and I’ll stop. I’ll take everything you say seriously and never laugh at you.”
I snorted. “No, you won’t.”
“No,” she said with a firm nod. “I really won’t.”
“Christ, we’re gonna have so much fun together.”
Nadine looked up at me, love shining bright in her eyes as she smiled that beautiful smile of hers. “I’m absolutely counting on it, Pain. I’m absolutely counting on it.”
