He throws his head back on a roar that shakes my bones. He beats a fist against his chest, turning and leaning in to the wall, his other hand on the back of his head as though he’s trying to keep it attached to his body.

“Family,” he grits out, punching the wall.

“What’s wrong? You’re scaring me.” I look around. What if he’s having a break of some kind? What if this nice, protective orc has some Jekyll and Hyde sort of deal going on and when he comes out of whatever this is? I’m going to be in his crosshairs.

His knees bend like he’s about to crumple to the floor and through my fear, I rush to his side, placing a hand on his back, the other on his arm, the muscles like stone, quivering as he shakes and grits his teeth.

“Family.” He repeats the word but I’m not sure he knows I’m here until he turns his head, eyes on mine. “You are family. I protect you. I am Gathred.”

“I know, you told me. What’s going on?”

His eyes close, his shaking stops, but his skin is cold. The heat from earlier is gone as he stumbles back, reaching for my hand on his arm and placing it over the center of his chest.

“I do not have a family. Only Argoth, he was my uncle. I did not protect him. I protected you. You are family.”

I’m confused and scared but also drawn to him.

“So, you are Hzarka right? The clan is your family name?” I ask as he walks backwards, pulling me down next to him on the green tweed sofa as it squeaks and cracks in protest under his weight.

“Yes. I have no memory, only what my uncle told me of my life before. I only knew my name when I woke. I was in a battle when we came to Earth, I was injured and all my memories were lost.” He rubs the dent on his skull, his enormous Adam’s apple moving in his throat as he swallows.

“I’ve studied a lot about orc clans. I’ve never seen eyes like yours, is that a family trait?”

He shakes his head. “I do not know. No others in my clan have white eyes.”

Again, I’m reminded of the details I read before. That the white eyes are a family trait, passed down from first born son to first born son. But it wasn’t the Hzarka clan that had that particular genetic anomaly. It was another clan that used to be around here. Lassa? Lanka? Something that sounded like that. If only I could remember the details.

“You are family,” he says and I smile, the heat returning to his skin. “You are also my mate.”

He drops that bomb, reaching down to flip the leather flaps of his kilt to the side and that’s when I see it.

Hard.

Orc.

Cock.

Spoiler alert. It’s huge.

Gathred

I knew nothing of mates and mating before Aleena. But when I caught her scent and my mating member thickened, I understood it all.

All at once, in one flash, all the generations of primal need came flooding back. I killed my own family for her. The only reason for it was that she was my mate. My one. My only. How this is true, I cannot puzzle out, but I am not an orc that worries about puzzles.

What is fact is fact and the fact is, she is my mate and I am hers.

I will protect her until my last breath.

This tiny human female has caused a rift inside of me. There is a warmth in my chest and a sense of…belonging.

She belongs to me. It feels good. There is an uncomfortable sense of hope that’s bombarding me when I look into her green eyes and imagine her under me, crying and begging for my seed.

Things I did not know I did not know, now can never be unknown again.

“You have a license to carry that thing?” she says as I expose my thick and aching mating cock. “It’s a high caliber concealed weapon.”

“I do not need this license. It hurts since I first saw you. You must make it feel better, Dostha.”

“Dostha? What is that?”

“It is orcish for a strong blue bird. Your eyes remind me of this bird. It is also beautiful, but strong and sometimes, mean.”

“Blue Jay.”

“Yes.” I nod. “Blue Jay. Dostha. You are my Dostha.”

“I’m nobody’s anything.”

I grunt on what I believe is a chuckle. “You will come to understand soon. Mates cannot be undone, no matter how difficult the mating might be.”

“Well, with that thing…” She clears her throat, but the heat in her face turns her skin brightest pink. “It will be damn near impossible. And, whatever, we are not mates. Humans don’t mate.”

I suck at my tusks, her defiance only makes my cock throb twice as hard.

“Orc cocks only harden for their mate and there is only one in a lifetime. This is fact.”
