His younger self had been dumb. Life was pretty perfect.

“You’ll want this gossip.” Charlie’s voice went low. “I got a call from Drake while I was out. I wanted to talk to you before we tell Tasha. Chet was found dead in his cell today.”

Oh. He opened his eyes and tilted his head her way. She was right. That was good gossip. “Do they think it was me?” It could have been if Tasha hadn’t made him promise not to murder the asshole. Another thought hit him. “Baby, was it you? You can tell me.”

Her pretty blue eyes rolled. “No, I did not somehow find the time between playing at the club last night and meeting Tash and Dare this morning to fly to and from DC, break into an Agency holding facility, and mysteriously exsanguinate our daughter’s ex.”

“But you could have,” he prompted.

She seemed to think about that for a moment. “It would be tight, but yes.”

“Exsanguinate?” It was an interesting way to assassinate a dude. A bit showy for his tastes. He would have gone for something simple like strangulation or evisceration.

“He lost ninety percent of his blood volume, and it wasn’t on the floor,” Charlie explained. “They think someone has a new weapon. I think someone didn’t want Chet to talk. I have to tell Tash.”

“Maybe leave out the blood volume part,” he advised.

His security system pinged, letting him know someone had entered the house. Bear’s head came up and his tail started wagging, telling him he didn’t need to get up because whoever was coming their way was a friendly.

“Dad! Mom!”

One of the twins.

Charlie stood up. “We’re in the back.”

Colton’s head came up, his tiny mouth yawning like a baby lion. He looked at his grandfather as though asking what the hell?

Ian wanted to know the answer, too. He shifted, sitting up as Kala and Kenzie raced out the back door.

“Dad, Cooper just got word from a friend of his in Army intelligence,” Kala said, a little breathless.

It was bad if Kala was panicking.

Charlie moved in, opening her arms. She took Colton as Ian got to his feet.

“What’s happening?” The nap would have to wait.

“TJ’s unit came under heavy fire,” Kenzie said. “I don’t have all the information, but TJ’s been taken. Cooper’s friend is saying that brass isn’t sure they want to risk a rescue.”

“So Lou’s already planning it,” Kala concluded. “She’ll go with or without us.”

Yep. His nap was over.

It was time to get back to work.
