No, I did not need the siren, but she did need to return to her home. So, with the power of Meya, I rescued her and her disappearing island, and hid them among the stars. She and her people were so thankful, they gave me a vial of something they called fairy dust.

They said if I ever needed their help, the dust would bring me, my daughters, and my daughters’ daughters to them until the line of the Cursebreakers ended. Which was nice and all, but I didn’t see what help we’d need from a band of pirates, orphans, and killer mermaids. For now, the vial sat safely in the castle vault.

“Calli? Calli?”

I turned around, catching Meliora’s wave as she and Bradach climbed the hill—hand in hand. Behind them, Mama carried the picnic basket, while Jaclan and Gisela carried the blanket and the baby seat for Rikdash.

I looked for Savia, and found her at the bottom of the hill with Keefe and Eadaoin. The three of them had become firm friends in the time the married couple started training my sister in combat and military strategy.

She claimed she needed to be an expert in both if she was going to become the next High Empress of Elva.

“What do you say, girls?” I stepped back, admiring our handiwork. “Should we break for lunch, and then defend our castle from Uncle JacDragon?”

“Yeah!”

“No,” Jaclan blared. He spread out the blanket. “I’m not playing the dragon again. I use fake fireballs, but those little monsters use real ones. My nostril hairs are still burning!”

Giggling, the girls rushed and tackled him—setting him off hooting and hollering trying to peel them off.

A warm, steady hand curled around my side, drawing me in.

I smiled up at my husband, and received a searing kiss in return—and a chorus of gagging from our daughters.

“As complete and total was my misery before I met you, my beauty, that is how fantastically happy you’ve made me now.” Eyes shining and full of love filled my heart to bursting. “Thank you, Calli, for running that much slower.”

I laughed. Alisdair decided within the last few years that he caught me so easily the times I ran from him, because I wasn’t really trying to get away.

“And of course, I wasn’t,” I whispered, holding him and our sweet baby in my arms. “Why would I run from you? You, Alisdair Lumenfell, are my happy ever after.”
