“What about the blood they were talking about?” My mind is racing a million miles an hour. I’m so happy to see Maven but also a little worried that this is some sort of prank.

Maven sighs, patient and smiling. “I dated Cyrus for close to a year. He spent many nights at my place, so that blood could be from any time or for any reason. He could have cut himself shaving, for crying out loud. So far, they have nothing.”

“That’s wonderful,” I say loudly and hug her again. “Does that mean this bullshit is over?”

“I wish. All it means is that Wilder managed to get me out of jail with a hefty bail. But the detectives are embarrassed and determined, which means they are still investigating.”

She rolls her eyes again, a smile on her face, but there’s pain in her eyes that she can’t hide from me. “I don’t think they’ll give up easily.”

“Of course not,” I snort. “It’s easier to pin a crime on an innocent person rather than do their fucking jobs.”

Those cops seriously make me want to do them bodily harm, but Maven is out, and that’s good news, so I just hope the MC can keep her out of jail for good. “Anything else to report?” I ask.

She shrugs and glances over my shoulder at Letty. “Yes and no. They asked a lot of questions about the guys, and I kind of got the feeling that they were more interested in the Reckless Souls than in whether or not I killed Cyrus.”

“Fucking cops,” I growl under my breath and shake my head. “I’m just happy to have you back, but you should probably tell Wilder what you suspect the cops are up to.”

She laughs and nods. “I’m happy to be back,” she says with wide, bright eyes.

I pull back and frown. “You have any prison sex stories you want to tell me about?”

Maven lets a loud laugh escape before she gives me a shove. “I wasn’t in prison, thank you very much. Besides, Doherty put me in a private cell out of courtesy for the MC.”

“So, no hot lesbian sex stories to wow us with? Bummer.” I wrap an arm around her waist and nod toward the office. “I guess you probably want to make sure I didn’t run your business into the ground while you were off munching on carpet?”

“Willow!”

I laugh. “Sorry, I couldn’t help it.”

“I know, but you kept For Goodness Cakes going, so I won’t hold it against you. Much.”

“Good, because I started social media pages for the bakery to announce specials and deals on end-of-the-day inventory. So far, it’s been…good,” I tell her nervously, unable to decipher the look on her face.

“You did all that, Willow?”

I nodded and took a step back, expecting her to explode or something. “Yes?” I draw the word out to about four syllables because suddenly, I’m feeling incredibly insecure. I’m not sure if Maven will appreciate the things I’ve tried in her absence. “Is that cool?”

“Is it cool? It’s more than cool, Willow. It’s great, Willow! I’ve been meaning to do it, but I keep finding thousands of excuses to do anything else. Thank you, honey.”

She wraps me in another hug, and I feel an unfamiliar sensation. Pride.

“Anyway, you can check out everything. Receipts and inventory and all that crap. Let me know if I screwed anything up,” I tell her and back away toward the door.

“Not so fast, Willow. Get your butt back here and catch me up on everything. And I mean everything.”

I drop down in a chair and smile. “I got a new tattoo!”

I know that’s not what she means, but after last night with Joaquin, the tat is all I’m ready to talk about. For now.

A teasing smile spreads across her face, but there’s some sadness in her brown eyes. “I heard. I guess Tank is the hot new artist?”

“Yes and he’s really good. Joaquin got a little jealous though.”

“Also heard. So, you and Joaquin have been spending some time together?”

“We have,” I say with a giant smile I can’t do a damn thing to stop. It’s ridiculous that even his name makes me smile like an idiot, but there it is.

I lean in across the desk and sigh. “I like him. A lot. And I’m determined to make that man mine, only I’m not sure how he feels about it.”

“That’s the scary part,” she tells me, a sly smile creeping across her face. “But I know a way to find out exactly how he feels.”

“Yeah?” My heart races, and I realize that I can have an answer as soon as tonight. “How?”

Maven sits back and folds her arms. “Ask him,” she replies with a knowing smile that trips into laughter.

I sit back, disappointed. “I thought you were being serious.”

“I am. It’s the only way to know for sure, Willow.”
