Ivor nodded and frowned at the weakness he could feel pulling at his body. “I don’t have a choice. Just please… Stay with him. He’s been getting more scared at night, so he needs someone to be there in case he needs them.”

“I think he’d rather it be you, Ivor.”

“Yeah, I’d rather it was me, too. But thanks.”

Emory stared hard at him before shaking his head. “Don’t worry, I’ll take care of him, but it’s damned obvious this isn’t what you want, so I’m concerned. You’re my friend—how you feel matters.”

“My magic is what it is. You know that.”

“Where are you going?”

“Maxi’s. It’s always easy to pull there.”

Emory laughed. “It’s always easy for you to pull everywhere.”

“I can say the same about you.” He said goodbye, then he slipped into the elevator.

The whole drive to Maxi’s, he felt like complete shit. He didn’t want to put his hands on anyone else, but his magic needed sustenance. His body felt weak and no amount of food would fix the problem. That kiss… it had been EVERYTHING.

But it had driven his hunger to an unbearable peak.

His entire body was still sparking from the absolute raw lust he’d felt—lust beyond his entire experience. And the desire for Rowan was still there, a living, breathing presence he knew in his heart would never go away.

He’d also felt Rowan’s emotions inside him.

If a mere kiss had done all that, what would actual sex be like?

He parked his car in the club’s lot and gripped the steering wheel so hard, it made an ominous cracking noise. Staring at the people coming out of the club, he wished he didn’t have to do this. But he needed his magic at full peak in order to help keep Rowan safe.

He could just go in there and find someone with red hair and freckles, but even as that thought came to him, he knew he wouldn’t do that. It would be better to find someone who was the complete opposite of Rowan.

Sighing, he got out of his car and walked into the club.

It was brighter than usual inside, the dance floor packed with gyrating bodies. High tables surrounded the dance floor that was so full, people were dancing among the tables as well. Loud music blared over the sound system, the low, heavy beat drawing Ivor toward the main dance floor. He did love to dance.

Tonight, it barely called him. Something about all of this felt off, and he was positive he knew what that something was. He did not fucking want to be there.

But this was a necessity. His magic had grown weak, which in turn, made his body and mind weak. He just couldn’t afford to be weak right now.

Normally, he liked the chase but tonight, he just wanted to get it over with, so he released a flood of pheromones into the crowd. Instead of the usually fun buildup of flirting and anticipation, he was after nothing but a quick fuck.

Faces turned his way, painted with sultry smiles of welcome. This was his greatest power, seduction, and he often used it when he’d let the hunger go on too long. It also worked when he needed to question or persuade someone. Like all the motel clerks when they’d been looking for Rowan.

But now he turned it way up—so high people were dropping the rules of polite society and coming forward to touch him.

Lust scented the air, along with sweat, perfume, and alcohol. He breathed it in, wishing that could be enough to sate his hunger, but knowing it could never be.

A big, muscular man approached him, one who filled out his jeans and tight T-shirt well. Black hair instead of red and not a freckle in sight. He was the type Ivor usually went for, and the narrow-eyed expression of lust on his face said Ivor’s pheromones had gotten him exactly what he wanted. No, he didn’t want—he just needed.

“I’m Phillip,” the man said as he stopped right in front of Ivor.

“Looking for some fun?” Ivor asked, running his finger down Phillip’s chest, though touching him felt all kinds of wrong.

“Fuck, yes,” he answered, eating Ivor up with his bright blue eyes. “You are seriously one hot motherfucker.”

“So are you.”

Phillip grabbed Ivor’s waist and tugged him in close as his hips swayed to the rhythm of the pounding music. The lust coming off the guy was so strong, Ivor’s magic would fill fast. So he closed his eyes and just let himself soak it in.

But behind his eyelids, all he could picture was Rowan’s pretty face.

All he could feel was the ghost of how Rowan had felt against him. The way he’d whimpered into Ivor’s mouth. The length of his hard dick under Ivor’s palm.

It was no use.

This wasn’t going to work.

He leaned back and gave Phillip a regretful smile. “Sorry to be a tease, but it seems my heart is with someone else tonight.”
