Alright.
Man’s not a total fucking monster, but who stays with someone who does the shit she’s done?
Why didn’t he get himself out?
Why didn’t he try to be a better man?
For himself?
For his fucking son?
“End this,” the bleeding man pleads other palm landing on Rabbit’s. “End. Her.”
Our woman slowly nods, determination undeniably erasing whatever get to safety plan we had.
“She’s asleep in the bridal suite.” This time a full fledge vile filled grin grows across his face. “I had one of the mercenaries swap my tea with hers.”
Chapter 24
Bunny
Winding duct tape around Beverly’s head to guarantee her mouth stays closed fills me with a multitude of emotions.
Glee.
Excitement.
Relief.
Determination.
I won’t let Curtis’s sacrifice be in vain.
Then again, I’m not sure it was a sacrifice.
Honestly?
He released us both.
We were each prisoners in cages we couldn’t escape.
His was just gilded.
And as much as I should probably hate him, as easy as it would be, I don’t.
I understand exactly what it’s like to be unknowingly poisoned.
Assaulted.
Used.
Abused.
I understand exactly what it’s like to think the person you’re with loves you rather than their ability to control or play with you.
And that’s all we ever were to the creepy Mommy and Boy duo.
Toys for them to play with.
Show up when necessary.
Break when they needed something broken.
Perhaps he could’ve done more back then, but what matters most is what he did now.
He helped keep me alive.
My child alive.
And for that?
I’ll pour one out for him.
Literally.
The silenced demon beginning to stir in her seat prompts me to give Mutt a command, “Gun.” He tosses the tool in my direction, which is an easy catch that occurs right as her eyelids attempt to lift. “Morning!”
They instantly widen at the sight of me.
“How ya feelin’?”
Noises get propelled in my direction from behind the tape alongside her body trying to twist to the left.
Right.
Left again.
“Relax,” I calmly insist prior to pressing the end of the object into her forearm beside the ropes that have her strapped down. “You’re not going anywhere.” Firing the first nail through her bone receives body shaking screams. “And there’s no need to worry about you falling out of the chair onto them.” Another nail penetrates the bone a few inches upward. “They’re dead, so they damn sure aren’t going anywhere.”
Beverly’s head manages to drop downward just enough to see the corpses of those she hired.
“Believe it or not this will be a better send off for them than what the company would’ve provided.” Moving the gun to the other side occurs next. “According to Braxton, anyway.” The quick, sharp sound indicating a third one has been launched pulls the corners of my lips towards my ears. “And he should know since he works for a similar enterprise.” Our eyes momentarily lock as I place the tool closer to where her arm bends. “Except they don’t kidnap pregnant women.” Unleashing the nail once more receives gut wrenching shrieks. “It’s a hard line for them.”
Incomprehensible murmurs hastily pour out of her mouth prompting Mutt to happily grump, “Fuck, I’m glad I ain’t gotta hear her.”
I toss him a mischievous look. “Aren’t we all?”
Snickers escape us both and Beverly uses what she believes is an open opportunity to jerk her head forward, hoping to collide it with mine.
The predictable move simply sparks more sadistic laughter when Kid grabs a fistful of her hair and snaps it backwards instead. “You’re done hurting our family.”
“So done,” I echo during my lowering to a squat, body impressively balancing around the lifeless figures encircling her. “So very, very, done, Beverly.”
Launching a line of nails along one shin causes the other to whip around in fear of being next. However, rather than rush the process, race to complete the task, I slow down.
Admire the blood dripping the length of her appendage.
Covering her in her own crimson colors instead of someone else’s for once.
I extend repeating the actions on the other leg by calling out the names of those in this town that lost their lives due to her.
Her son.
One nail for each I easily recall.
Two for the ones I have to be reminded of.
By the time I’m rising back to my feet, Mutt’s palm is open, waiting for me to transfer the tool back over.
“Like your son…” Memories of what we did to him result in a smile being twitched on my face. “Like your son that we savagely tore limb from limb…” new howls of hatred spew into the tape, “you have caused nothing but misery your entire existence.”
Tears and blood and screeches ceaselessly flow from her.
“However, I am about to rectify that.” The next item for retribution is shifted into my grasp. “The company you paid to kidnap me? They were not only informed that their efforts were unsuccessful resulting in multiple deaths of their own men, but that they should simply terminate your account as well as any records you acquired one or used their services. And by doing so they have been allowed to keep the money from the contract you already paid in full.” A condescending shrug escapes at the same time Kid slams the already gasoline-soaked tire around her unmovable frame. “See, staging a helicopter crash is costly. And since they provided the helicopter – upon us agreeing to let their pilot live and not seek retribution for almost killing us – it only seemed…fair?” My free hand is theatrically waved in the air. “Brad dying on a failed camping excursion was easy enough to fake, but having you two,” I gesture downward to where Curtis is directly beside her feet, “die in a desperate search for him?” Smiling can’t be stopped. “That exit form basically wrote itself.”
