I fire off a text to Mac to get her to check Kinsley’s location. I tried, but it’s not working. She responds almost instantly, letting me know the phone is off and has lost its signal in the back school parking lot.

Mac follows that up by sending me a video. It’s from one of the cameras back there. I watch as Blair takes the phone from Kinsley, powering it off. Kinsley doesn’t protest. In fact, she appears pissed and hurt, but a look of determination takes over her beautiful face.

The determination she has is one of the many things that drew me to her. Now it might kick me in the damn ass.

“Are you sure Blair is on your side?”

“If I know one thing about girls, ones like Blair, Kinsley, or our families, it’s that having another girl’s back comes before anything else.”

“Come on.” I grab the rest of my shit before jogging out toward the parking lot.

I’ve learned my lesson. You can’t only have a tracker on a person's phone. You need more than one. I’ll make sure that’s handled before I let Kinsley out of my sight again.

“Hold up!” my brother shouts from outside the car as I fire it up. I give a half-second pause to let him jump in. “Fucking hell. I was two seconds behind you.”

“Yeah, and one was more than I’m okay with.” I can’t wait for the day he falls on his ass.

“The party won’t be in full swing yet. The game just ended.”

“And most cleared out at the start of the fourth quarter.” There was no point in lingering. We were way up, and I’d been pulled off the field.

“Sorry, I missed that. I was still on the field blocking Ryan’s shitty ass.”

“He tries.” I’ll give the kid that. He’s only a sophomore, but he shows up and gives it his all.

My father told me it’s not always the most talented people who go far in life. They often have shit handed to them. It’s the people who show up every day and give it everything they have. They are a different breed and the kind of people you want around you.

“I know, it’s why I don’t let anyone knock him in the fucking head.” I nod, knowing that’s true.

Damon is a wall. It doesn’t matter if he’s on the football field or not. You have to get through him to get to anyone or anything he cares about. His favorite way of you doing that is to try and hit him.

It does get him pissed off quickly, and a pissed-off Damon is not a person anyone wants to deal with. I know he can feel at least some level of pain, but it’s not on any kind of normal level.

One time, we had to dig a few holes, and Nix accidentally hit him with the shovel, slicing his eyebrow. Blood had been dripping down. We told him to stop, but he swore he was fine and kept on digging.

Mom had to finally yank him back, and that’s when we saw he needed to be stitched. Damon never so much as flinched. He would have kept digging that hole until he got to China.

“My bet is the party is already going.” And I’ve got a pissed-off girlfriend. I know from the women in my family that when they’re pissed, they can get up to anything.

Chapter Twenty

KINSLEY

If there is one thing a bunch of rich kids can do, it is throw a freaking party. This one is in full swing the second we walk through the front door. I was worried about how I might be able to go unnoticed when Jax showed up, but I can see that will be easy enough. The party is happening in multiple parts of the giant-ass house I’m in.

It might not be as big as the Marino family's home; I'm not sure many are, but they sit out on a nice stretch of land, where this home is right on the edge of the city, on the other side of the river.

The kitchen is loaded with people, along with a game room on the bottom floor that leads out to a massive patio. A ton of people are in the pool, while others are scattered around the DJ, who is already blasting music.

“You want another?” Blair asks, sipping a pretty pink drink that clashes well with her shiny black nails.

I was drinking some lemon concoction because this party doesn’t only have one bartender but three with a whole drink menu. Yeah, insane. I think the bartenders might be the only people at the party of age to actually be drinking.

I’ve had a few glasses of wine or champagne before, but this is sweet and rather tasty.

“Yes,” I say before I can think better of it.

As if by magic, Blair disappears and reappears with a drink in seconds, or maybe I lost track of time people watching. I’d taken up residence on one of the chairs around the pool. I grabbed one in the corner. That way, I could face everyone.
