I felt like they could see the bruises from Rick’s belt, the bareness of my most intimate places, and the lacy white thong panties April had presented to me at the day spa.

“From Rick,” she had said, handing me the slim box that held both the panties and a matching bra. “He chose them from the New Modesty site, and I get to give them to you.”

She had made me, blushing furiously, put them on and look in the mirror as she and Reba paid me compliments on my body that seemed much more humiliating than any insult could ever be.

Made you? asked the increasingly sarcastic observer.

Yes! the brat replied. Made me!

April would have reported me to Rick, wouldn’t she, if I hadn’t stood there in front of the mirror in my naughty new lingerie and pretended to admire myself.

Well… not really pretended, I thought as April introduced me to the woman I didn’t know at the table in the country club dining room, an Ella Stevens who said something confusing about her husband’s job. No, maybe I hadn’t pretended looking at the skimpy lacy bra and the even skimpier panties, because I did look… well, pretty sexy in them. The sight of my whipped bottom, set off by the thong that felt so strange on my smooth pussy and between my rear cheeks, had made me feel a little faint.

Mrs. Purdy said, “Joe—that’s Ella’s husband—has seen Rick’s resumé and thinks he’ll be a great fit for his executive training program.”

We had sat down at the table, lovely menus in our hands. I had managed not to squirm in my chair yet, though I hadn’t been able to keep myself from drawing a sharp breath at the flash of pain as I had sat down. With heat in my cheeks, I had turned my attention immediately to the menu, not wanting even to know whether any of the other women had noticed the telltale sign of a young wife who had misbehaved and suffered the consequences. I had to look up from the menu, though, to meet Mrs. Purdy’s eyes.

The older woman had a tight little smile on her face. It seemed to say that she was happy to give me this good news, but she doubted whether I really deserved it—though she hoped I would come to, one day.

Does she know? I wondered. Does she know just how completely Rick decided to follow her advice for training his young bride?

April’s words from the day spa came back to me. Selecta knows everything.

Of course Mrs. Purdy knew; I could see it in her eyes. She knew that I had learned a lesson in obedience, whether she could guess any of the details. The wild fear shot through my mind that she could somehow read on my face that my husband had informed me he would enjoy my virgin anus that night. My heart raced, and I had to swallow hard before I answered her, awkwardly late and with a forced smile that I felt certain she could see right through.

“That’s wonderful! Thank you!” I looked over at Ella. “And… is Rick going to meet your husband today?”

Ella, obviously just as nice as all the people I had met in Rocky Falls with the exception of Mrs. Purdy, smiled warmly.

“They’ve already met—in the locker room, I think. They’re eating in the men’s grill.”

I returned my eyes to my menu. How the simple words locker room and men’s grill could make me think such alarming things—about what men might talk about in Rocky Falls, when by themselves—I didn’t know. The heat seemed to surge and recede in my face with every passing anxiety about this town and what it might mean for me, and for Rick and me as a couple.

Insanity, said the defiant part of me. Just get through this lunch and then you can try to work it out with Rick.

“Joan,” Mrs. Purdy said to the pretty receptionist, “why don’t you tell Mandy what helped you the most when you were getting used to marriage.”

I looked up at that, because Joan did seem very nice, and interested in making me feel at ease—something I didn’t think really applied to her boss. She had a blush in her cheeks that made me feel a little better about mine. Rocky Falls? the brat asked in my mind. They should have called this place Blushington.

“Well,” Joan said slowly, “I guess… I mean, I guess when I let go of my ideas about what I thought it should be like, to be married—especially to a man like Felipe. There are things no one can really tell you, right?”

April and Ella nodded vigorously.

“Like how, you know,” Ella said, “something that seems embarrassing and, well, you know, uncomfortable…”

The waitress took our order, burgers all around. I tried to get my heart rate under control.
