“You’re goin’ to be the death of me,” Adan murmurs, giving me a look that makes me feel funny on the inside.

I grin. “Oh, honey, you have no idea.”

A knock sounds at the door, and both of us look at each other. “You expecting someone?”

“Nope, you?”

“Nope.”

He walks over, and I continue chopping the vegetables for my stir-fry. When he doesn’t return, I place the knife down and walk out to see what’s going on. There, at the door, is Hera. She’s crying and waving her arms around, sniffling something to him as he tries to talk to her calmly. Great, I forgot about her. Lorelei, she moved onto another job and let us be. Hera is not in the same boat.

When her eyes fall on me, she stops sniffling and just stares at me.

“Her,” she sobs. “You chose her?”

“I guess the chunk got to him in the end,” I say with a shrug. “A man can’t help what he wants.”

Hera glares at me. “What does she have that I don’t?”

“Booty,” I point out.

Adan gives me a look. Yes, yes, I need to go away but honestly, she deserves it. She was rude and quite frankly, I’m tired of it. She wants to come around here, then she gets what she’s delivered.

That, being me.

“Adan?” Hera sobs. “Are you going to answer me?”

Adan exhales, like he just doesn’t have the energy to deal with any of this right now. “She’s my girl, Hera. What do you want me to say?”

Aw, his girl.

He said I’m his girl.

That feels really, really good.

“We had something,” she cries.

He shakes his head. “We didn’t.”

Hera’s eyes move to me, then back to Adan and she exclaims, “I’m pregnant.”

Sweet Jesus, she is desperate. I give her a pitying look. It’s the oldest trick in the book, and I mean sure, it works. She and I both know that she’s not pregnant. It’s a desperate attempt to get Adan to be with her. She feels like she has no other option right now, and she’s going to use whatever she can. I can’t say I blame her, but it’s not going to fly either. “Honey, both you and I know you have to be able to follow through with that lie. Can you follow through with it? Really?”

Hera crosses her arms in a huff. “Yes, I can prove it. I’ll...I’ll prove it.”

I smile. “Well, it’s your lucky day, I have a pregnancy test right here. I can go and get it, and you can prove it.”

Her face pales. “I can’t...I can’t right now.”

I purse my lips. “Oh, why ever not?”

She glares at me. “I don’t need to pee.”

“I’m sure we’ve got some juice you can have, don’t we, babe?”

I look to Adan who has gone a little pale at Hera’s outburst. He’s a man. I can’t say I blame him. They don’t tend to think too much about how these things work. A woman says she’s pregnant and he loses his shit.

“Babe,” I say, clicking my fingers. “It’s not true.”

He looks at me. “What?”

“It’s not true.”

He looks confused. “How do you know?”

“I just do. Isn’t that right, Hera?” I say, glancing back at her.

She turns and rushes off with a huff.

We watch her get into her car and disappear.

“What the fuck just happened?” Adan mutters, a little distressed.

“She tried the oldest trick in the book, and I called her out on it. She knew she wasn’t pregnant and if she had to take a test, it would say no. Any girl ever tries that on you, you don’t let her leave until she has peed on a stick because guaranteed, she’ll find a man to knock her up and claim it’s yours.”

Adan stares at me, shocked. “You have a pregnancy test here?”

I laugh. “No. But she didn’t know that. It worked. She high-tailed it.”

“Fuck. I’ll never understand you women.”

I grin, going up onto my tiptoes and kissing him. “Don’t even try to, honey. It’ll get you nowhere.”

He follows me back into the house, where I finish up making dinner.

“Can’t believe she tried to drop that one on me,” Adan mutters to himself as he drinks another beer while watching me cook. “If you weren’t here, I’d probably have believed it.”

“Well, think yourself lucky I was here.”

“Fuckin’ lucky, alright.”

He stands and walks around the kitchen bench, pulling me into his arms. He kisses me, long and deep, and then presses my body against the counter as his mouth trails down my neck. “My chicken will burn,” I murmur, dropping my head back to enjoy just a second of his lips moving over my skin.

“Fuck the chicken.”

I laugh, pushing him back with my hands on his chest. “We cannot fuck the chicken. I put a lot of effort into this chicken.”

I didn’t, actually. I cut it up and poured some sauce on it.
