“I don’t want Nate’s hands on me, Hayes,” I admitted, not looking away from him.

Adrian’s eyes moved to my mouth, and his nostrils flared. “If you come inside with me, you’re staying.”

I glanced back at him as I reached for the door handle. “Maybe this time, you’ll do a better job of wearing me out.”

ADRIAN

The moment we stepped inside my rental cabin, the atmosphere shifted from charged to combustible. Snow from our boots melted into puddles on the hardwood floor, but neither of us moved to take off our coats. We stood there in the entryway, breathing hard, while unspoken words hung between us like a live wire, dangerous and electric.

“Hayes,” Maddox said, my name rough on his tongue.

I reached for him, my hands fisting in the front of his flannel shirt. “If you’re about to spout some nonsense about suddenly needing to get back to the store, fuck off,” I grumbled before pressing my lips to his in a hard kiss.

The sound of air rushing in through his nose and the feel of his fingers sneaking under my coat to clutch at my hips turned me on even more than I already was.

“No,” he said before quickly adding, “Not leaving. Not as long as you keep your hands on me. Your mouth on me.”

The words were hot on my lips, mingled with the scent of melting snow and mountain air. Maddox tasted like cinnamon, and I remembered the flex of his jaw earlier as he’d chewed on a piece of gum angrily.

“You didn’t like it when Nate touched me,” I said, suddenly realizing the reason behind his bad mood. There was grumpy, and then there was standoffish. Maddox had been unusually quiet at Nate’s place.

“No,” Maddox agreed, his voice rumbling against my chest as he turned us and crowded me against the wall.

“That’s rich, considering I’m not the one with a Nate fuck history,” I snapped. My fingers brushed the warm skin above his collar and dipped underneath the edge of the fabric. The scent of him was intoxicating. Now that we were inside the heated space, I could smell his body, masculine and warm.

“Didn’t mean anything,” he said breathlessly before nipping at my chin. “He’s not the relationship type.”

I pulled away and forced him to meet my eyes. “And you are?”

Maddox’s slate-colored eyes darkened as he glared at me. “Wasn’t before.”

The implication that things might have changed made my heart rate stutter. I opened my mouth to challenge him, to press him on whether he’d consider more than just a physical connection with me, but then I stopped.

How would that even work? What would it look like?

I couldn’t answer those questions right now, and there was no way I’d waste minutes I could be enjoying his body with stupid, needy requests for reassurance and real feelings.

My stomach flipped as the words tumbled out. “Want you to fuck me.”

Slate flinted and sparked. “Blowie didn’t do the job the other day?”

The breaths came short and shallow in my chest. “Maddox… I want… I just…” I couldn’t say it. Couldn’t admit that I wanted him to take possession of me, even if it was temporary. “Yes.”

Maddox’s fingers tightened on my hips before letting go and moving up to my wrists. He pulled my hands away from his shirt and pinned them against the wall next to my head. Then he stepped even closer and ground his hard cock against mine. “You want me inside you, Adrian?”

His low, teasing voice was melted chocolate that seeped into all of the spaces between us and lay hot and sweet on my skin.

My eyes fell closed. All I could do was feel the tight grip of his fingers, the thick ridge of his cock, and the warm breath of his dirty promises on my cheek as he leaned in.

“You going to be my pretty boy?” he whispered. “Let me take off all those fancy clothes and lay you out just for me to see?”

My dick was painfully hard and trapped uncomfortably behind way too much fabric. “Stop fucking with me,” I urged with about as much force as a cartoon feather floating above a sleeping cat.

Maddox’s teeth grazed my earlobe as his voice snuck into my ear. “Promise me the real Adrian Hayes.”

I opened my eyes in surprise.

He was watching me carefully as he leaned in to press soft kisses across my chin and cheek and lips. “Promise just for tonight,” he urged. “No mask. No filters. Just you. The real you.”

My heart thundered between us before I finally admitted the truth in a too-small voice. “What if I don’t know who that is?”

His smile was soft and kind, unexpectedly warm and understanding. “Then be unsure. Authentically unsure.”

The provoking asshole’s words should have made my dick soft and my anger flare, but they didn’t. It felt like an invitation instead of a challenge. An offer of a safe space. One I knew I could trust.
