She tucks a strand of her light brown hair behind her ear. “I’m not joking, Abby. You’ll like him. He’s a Wall Street guy. Cute, funny, and he’s been looking to settle down.”

I shake my head. “I’m not looking to settle down. I’m too busy with work for that.”

“So you fuck him a few times and call it a day.”

I let out a squeak of laughter. “No. Absolutely not.”

Her gaze skims the screen of her phone. I know she’s keeping a watchful eye on her text messages for a good reason. Nyssa has been a single mom since she split with her boyfriend when Myka was six months old. He has their sweet little girl for the evening. That’s the only reason why Nyssa suggested we meet up for dinner. If she’s not working, she’s devoting every second of her time to her daughter. Even now, she’s keeping her phone close so she won’t miss a text from her ex.

“You’re saying that you want me to break his heart?” She shoots me the same disappointed look she always does when I won’t agree to her setups. “I’m supposed to tell him you’re not interested?”

I nod. “Why don’t you go out with him? He sounds like he’s more your type than mine.”

Her green eyes widen. “Keith and I are friends, Abs. I don’t fuck friends.”

“I thought Otto was your friend before you two created that little slice of heaven you named Myka Marie.”

One of her red fingernails taps her chin. “I can’t argue with that, but the fuck did mess up our friendship. Now, we are just two single parents who talk about their daughter.”

“You can change that,” I say as I notice a waiter approaching us.

Nyssa glances in his direction. “I don’t want to think about changing that. All I want right now is a man who can make me come.”

The waiter clears his throat. “Good evening. I’m Zayden. I’ll be your server. Shall I share today’s specials with you?”

I bow my head because there’s no way in hell he didn’t catch Nyssa’s last comment about wanting a man who can make her come.

“Please.” Nyssa sighs. “Lay it all on me.”

I hold in a laugh.

He rattles off three entrees that sound divine.

I settle on the sea bass, and Nyssa opts for a garden salad with grilled lemon chicken on the side. She takes it a step further by ordering a bottle of their best white wine for us to share.

As soon as he’s turned and walked away, I glance across the table at her. “He heard you.”

She rolls her eyes. “I’m sure he’s making someone very happy in bed on a nightly basis.”

I look his way to find him engrossed in a conversation with a couple seated several feet away from us. “Maybe you could be that someone.”

“He’s what…twenty-one or twenty-two?” She laughs. “I’ve got a decade on him, Abby. I want a man my age that knows how to fuck me into next week.”

I have no response to that, so I smile.

“Maybe I’m delusional, and men like that don’t exist anymore.” She leans both elbows on the table.

I know from very recent experience that she’s wrong about that. Declan Wells took very good care of me last night. I haven’t stopped thinking about him or the sex since I left his apartment.

“There’s always Otto,” I offer with a grin.

Surprisingly, she doesn’t say a thing. Instead, she scoops up her phone, slides a finger across the screen, and checks her text messages again.

Returning to the office after dinner wasn’t part of my evening’s plans, but I received an email from a client of Mr. Thorsen’s just as I was leaving the bistro.

He asked me to stop by his outdoor equipment store in the morning to pick up an envelope for my boss. Since I’ve sat in on almost every meeting he had with Rook when he was setting up his business several months ago, I happily agreed to drop in on my way to work.

I have no intention of showing up empty-handed. On the day of the store’s grand opening, I was there alongside my boss and I snapped a picture of him with his client.

After I had it framed, I stuck it in the bottom drawer of my desk. Tomorrow, I can hand-deliver it with a note from the law firm on my behalf, wishing him all the best.

I enter the lobby of the building and raise a hand in greeting to the man sitting behind a desk in the corner. Even though most of the people who work in this office tower have cleared out for the day, there are always a few who sneak in extra hours. I know I’ll see several familiar faces once I get to my floor.

“Miss Duvall!”

“Hi, Desmond,” I greet him with a smile as I approach where he’s now standing. “I need to run up to my office to grab something.”
