“I’ll go up the death closet as long as you’re there to occupy me.” My freaking mouth. It’s making promises that there’s no way my body can fulfill tonight.

“Don’t worry. I’ll take care of you.” Fischer not only keeps my mind occupied the entire elevator ride, but he also takes me straight to his huge bathroom and runs a hot bath for me.

I open my mouth to tell him there’s no way I can participate in any intimate workouts tonight, but he holds up his fingers to my lips. “I know you’re going to need a few days to recover. Let me take care of you.”

Yep. He’s keeping the perfect guy title.

We spend the next two nights snuggled together in his bed, and Fischer never complains about waiting, even though I can feel his hardness pressed against me. “You need to worry about the grand opening. Then we’ll get back to nightly workouts,” he tells me. If he didn’t already own my heart, he would’ve just stolen it.

CHAPTER

EIGHT

MADDIE

I wake up Saturday morning and find the discomfort in my girly bits is nearly gone. Fischer grumbles in his sleep as I slip from his embrace and head to the bathroom for a long shower.

I’m counting on the hot water to wake me the heck up. The last thing I want to do is fall asleep at our grand opening. Plus, Fischer’s family is due to arrive in Silver Spoon Falls this afternoon, and I definitely want to make a good impression.

“I hate waking up alone.” Fischer steps into the shower and pulls me against his body. “You should’ve woken me up.”

“I wanted to earn the best girl in the world title by letting you sleep in.” I lean against his muscular body and let the steam surround us.

Fischer pours shower gel onto a sponge and slowly starts to run it over my body. “You earned that the first time you smiled at me,” he whispers against the side of my neck.

“Then I want to keep the title.” I look over my shoulder and smile up at him.

“It’s yours for life,” he promises and pours shampoo into his palm. “Turn around and let me take care of you.” After massaging the shampoo into my hair, he helps me rinse and then applies conditioner.

“That feels so good,” I groan as he massages my scalp. “You could totally get a job as a shampoo man if the whole attorney gig falls through.”

“I’ll keep that in mind.” Fischer laughs.

While I put on makeup and blow dry my hair, Fischer throws on his clothes and then heads to the kitchen to make us breakfast. I step out of the shower and find a text message from Jenna. Their late-night flight got delayed twice and then canceled. They won’t be able to make the opening.

I dial Jenna, hoping I’m not waking her up after the late night. “I’m so sorry,” she answers. “The freaking weather is causing delays all over. We won’t be able to get another flight this weekend.”

“It’s no big deal,” I reassure her as disappointment cuts through me. “I’m sorry I won’t see you guys, but I totally understand.”

“We promise to come to see the store as soon as we can.” I hang up knowing my friends will make good on their promise.

“Why the sad face?” Fischer comes looking for me a few minutes later.

“My friends at the magazine won’t be able to make it today,” I tell him. “Their flight was canceled, and they can’t get another one this weekend.” I feel tears forming.

“I’m so sorry, love.” He pulls me close, and I instantly feel better. “What can I do to make this better?”

“You already have.” I smile up at him. “Now, we better get to the store before Allie has a heart attack.” Pushing my disappointment to the back of my mind, I concentrate on surviving the grand opening.

We end up leaving the apartment a few minutes late and rush to the bookstore.

“Where have you been?” Allie stops pacing and growls. “We open in thirty minutes.”

“Calm down and take a deep breath.” Fischer walks over and hugs his sister. “Everything will be fine.”

“You haven’t sunken your entire savings into this.” She reaches under the counter to grab a paper bag and begins breathing into it. “I’m lightheaded.”

“Because you’re hyperventilating.” I walk over and give my partner a hug. “Stop worrying so much. We’re going to do great. The new and improved Gatsby Books is going to kick ass.”

Allie takes a deep breath before giving me a weak smile. “I’m not sure why I’m so freaked out.” She explains, “I was fine until I woke up and realized today is the day.”

“Don’t worry,” I reassure her. “We’ve totally got this.”

I explain that Jenna and the guys had flight issues, trying to occupy her until it’s time to open the store.
