Just tell him.
She didn’t know why this was so hard. They had been having unprotected sex, and there was no way this should make her panic. Unprotected sex led to babies, to families.
And yet, she smiled at him, then took a sip, and the moment she did, she felt her stomach instantly reject it. She tried to keep it down, but her baby was having other ideas. Shoving the coffee into his hand, she didn’t say a word as she ran to the bathroom. She did close and lock the door, and then bent over the toilet. She hurled absolutely everything she had eaten and drunk that morning.
“Katie, what’s going on? Are you okay?” he asked.
She didn’t say a word, pushing her hair out of the way as she threw up a little more.
This was not good. This was not sexy.
“I’m fine,” she said, taking a deep breath. What else could she tell him?
“Babe, please open the door, you’re sick, and I want to be there for you. I’m going to tell the coffee shop that their milk is off, okay?”
“It’s not the milk,” she said, flushing the toilet and putting down the lid so she could sit on it. She ran her hands across her face, feeling like absolute shit. Pressing a hand to her stomach, she tried to soothe out the ache, calm herself, and stop the sick feeling.
“Katie?”
The door was still closed and locked and she knew she was being a big baby. This was not how she wanted to tell him. The only problem was, every single time she had attempted to tell him, she’d panicked. She didn’t know how to tell him they were going to have a baby. They hadn’t talked about babies or a future. All they had done was enjoy each other, that was it.
She stared at that door and knew this couldn’t go on. “There’s something I need to tell you,” she said.
“Open the door, Katie,” Hawk said.
“I can’t.”
“Are you trapped?”
“No, I’m not trapped, but there is something I need to tell you, and this is the only way I can do it. I keep chickening out, and this is the best way to do it.” She took a deep breath.
What the hell am I doing?
I should tell him face to face and not be a coward.
I shouldn’t be doing this.
There was no other option.
“Hawk, I’m pregnant,” she said.
“Katie, open the door.”
“No, I can’t. Not yet. We haven’t talked about it, but I took some tests several weeks ago and they were all positive. We’re going to have a baby, and I know this might not be something you want, so I’m going to give you an out. You don’t have to be part of our baby’s life if you don’t want to.”
She didn’t know why she was doing this. The truth was, she wanted him to stay.
“Katie, I can’t do this with a door between us.”
“Please, could you give me ... some space, I just ... I need to freshen up.” She was being a bitch, and she knew it.
“Sure,” he said.
She was pretty sure he placed his hand on the door, as if he could reach out and touch her, but she got to her feet, moved the short distance to the sink, and glanced at her reflection. It was not pretty. She looked pale and a little green around the edges. There was no way she was going to be able to face Hawk like this. She looked terrible.
Splashing some water on her face, she pressed a towel to dry her face, then brushed her teeth. With all the vomiting, she had purchased an extra toothbrush and paste for the shop to freshen her mouth. The last thing she wanted to do was frighten the customers away with her stinky breath.
Taking one last look in the mirror, she nodded her head and stepped out of the bathroom. The shop floor was completely empty, and there was no sign of Hawk. And that felt like her whole world had deflated.
She moved toward the door and saw he’d put a sign up saying they’d be back soon. She flipped it to let people know they were open, all the time feeling her heart break.
You’re the one that told him to give you space.
Why are you feeling sorry for yourself?
You did this.
No one else.
She wanted to burst into tears. It was then she realized she didn’t want Hawk to leave. She had wanted him to stay, to promise her that no matter what, they could make this work.
Chapter Eleven
“Has anyone told you that you’ve got way too much time on your hands?” Sarah said.
Hawk looked toward his sister. “No, what are you talking about? Tell me what you think?”
“Do you want my perspective as a woman or as a mother, or as your sister?” Sarah asked.
