Is he crying? I think I might be.
He looks up at me, his face a beautiful mess, and the world tilts. My kitchen and this man are suddenly the center of the universe.
When he finally speaks, his voice is raw. "Evie. Jesus. I love you. I love you so much it hurts," he says, like the truth is the only anchor he has.
I comb my fingers through his hair, trying not to sob. "You better," I manage, the words wobbling, "because you're stuck with me. And this." I press his palm to my stomach.
"My baby," he whispers, his whole body shuddering, and I just lose it, sobbing so loud my throat hurts from the sound.
He scoops me off the island, lifting me like I'm precious, breakable, a treasure he's afraid to drop. I clutch his neck and burrow into his shoulder, unable to do anything but hold on as he spins us slowly in a soundless, dizzy waltz.
It's the best moment of my life.
