“I can see that I’m going to be your guard dog.” He shook his head and made his way to the front door, expecting to be greeted by the delightful smell of food, only to see the ugly-ass face of his brother.

“Bull,” he said.

“What game are you playing?” Bull asked.

“Game?”

“Calling Maddie to get her to do your dirty work.”

“Oh, that.”

“Oh, yes, fucking that, Grant.”

“I wasn’t … come on, I needed to get Wanda to the vet’s and I know you’d have told me to wait.”

Bull looked toward the sofa and shook his head. “And what is wrong with fucking Wanda?”

“The vet thinks it could be the shelter. That she’s sad.”

“Seriously, you disturbed Maddie because of this.”

Grant wanted to argue with his brother but he also knew that Bull was in one of those moods. The kind that meant he needed to get something off his chest. So, he stood and waited.

“Do you have any idea how tired Maddie is? The baby is not fucking sleeping through the night. Maddie is always there. She’s not getting much sleep, and I took Lindsey with me today to give her a chance to rest, and then you call her up!”

He hadn’t realized that Maddie was still having issues sleeping. Whenever they talked, which wasn’t often since the baby had arrived, she hadn’t said anything. If he’d known, he wouldn’t have gotten her involved. He held his hands up in surrender.

“I’m sorry.”

“You’re always so fucking sorry, but I’m getting tired of this shit, Grant. When are you going to grow up?”

This was normal. Bull often asked him this question, and the truth was, he didn’t have a fucking clue.

“You flit through life like nothing matters. You’re supposed to be working at my fucking garage. You’re one of the best mechanics I’ve got, and you rarely turn up. The only consistency you have is when it comes to the club, and even then, you try to take my fucking place.”

“Look, I told you, I wasn’t thinking—”

“You never fucking think!”

He’d expected Bull to be pissed at him, but this was a whole new level of fucked off, and he didn’t know what to do, so he just waited, and waited.

Bull paced back and forth, running fingers through his hair, seeming even more pissed off with every second he was there.

“How is Maddie?” Grant asked.

“She’s fucking tired.”

He deserved that one.

Suddenly, Bull stopped. “You know what, enough. Enough of your shit, Grant. Until you get your act together, you’re on dog duty. That’s all. I don’t want you at the clubhouse. I don’t want you fucking near me or the garage, or anything.”

Grant stopped. “Fuck, no. You’re not kicking me out of the club. I’ve always been this fucking way, and so what if I don’t get to the garage. You’ve got Pat and the other guys. You don’t fucking need me.”

Bull stepped up to him and pointed a finger at his head. “That’s your problem. You don’t fucking think, and maybe, just fucking maybe, if you gave yourself time to think, you’d realize that there are a lot of us waiting for you. I mean it, Grant. Until further notice, you’re on suspension.”

“Suspension?” Grant shook his head. “This is bullshit.”

“It is what it is. I’ve already spoken to the boys. You’re not to come by the club. You want me or one of the brothers, you fucking call me and I’ll deal with it, but you need a wake-up call and I hope this is it.”

Grant didn’t get a chance to stop Bull. He was already out the door.

Suspended. From the club. He’d never heard anything so fucking stupid in his life. After locking the main door, he made his way back to the sitting room.

Wanda waited for him. There was a little whimper and he crouched down and started to stroke her fur. “What the fuck do you think that was about?” he asked.

He was tempted to call Maddie to piss his brother off, but decided against it.

This was classic Bull behavior. It wasn’t the first time he’d been pissed and made a judgement call without thinking about it, and he doubted it would be the last. There was no way Bull could suspend him from the club. It just wasn’t possible.

Wanda continued to whimper and he sighed.

“Are you needing a walk, girl?” he asked.

Another whimper followed by a head tilt.

“Yeah, let’s go for a walk. I don’t want to stay locked up in this apartment either.” He grabbed her walking lead, attached it to her collar, and left the apartment.

The moment he stepped outside, he gritted his teeth. It was fucking freezing. Glancing down at Wanda, he wondered if she was too cold to go for this walk, or just needed to squat down outside. He saw something precious—her tail wagged—and he was going for a walk. They walked down the long staircase, heading out toward the town. It was dark, as it was quite late.
