Meaning, though he was starting something brand new, he’d had plenty of time to not only go play eighteen holes today at the local golf course, but he’d also had time to take a fuckin’ nap.

Me, on the other hand? I had enough time to take a shit.

That was about it.

Needless to say, by the time that dinner was over, I was more than ready to go home.

I stood up, collected my empties, and then started to the trash when I heard booing behind me.

I chuckled.

“Sorry, guys. I’m exhausted. And I still have to look through applicants,” I grumbled as I dumped my empties into the trash.

“I have to feed my wonky donkey, too.” Matilda followed right behind me, throwing her three empty water bottles into the trash.

As she did, she brushed against my chest with her breast, and I had to suppress the desire to pull her into me and take her mouth.

Not only would that delay us in getting home, it would also cause every single person in the room to comment.

Neither of which I had time for.

Matilda, however, had different plans.

She leaned into me, pressed a kiss on the first piece of my body she could reach—my throat—and backed away.

Before she could take two steps, I caught her around a belt loop, tugged her into me, and buried my tongue down her throat.

“Eeep,” she squeaked just before my mouth came down on hers.

I grinned wickedly when I pulled away, loving the look of shock on her face.

“That’s… what…” she whispered, scandalized.

I winked at her and pulled away, looking over her shoulder to find the entire room focused on us.

“Well then,” Diana fanned herself with her shirt. “That was impressive. I think we need to go home, too.”

She grabbed Bain by the jacket and tugged.

He didn’t have to come, but it was obvious that he was used to giving the woman anything that she wanted.

“All right, all right,” he stood up. “But you do know this is our house?”

“Shit,” Diana whispered.

There were rounds of chuckles, and I used that as my moment to escape.

Getting outside, I picked the kennel up with the tiny donkey and walked it over to the van just in time for Matilda to get there and open it for me.

The doors of the van were barely closed when a car came screeching around the corner of the neighborhood entrance, zooming toward us.

“Fuck,” I heard Matilda say just as the car came to a screeching halt, double-parking next to her van.

“You!” An older woman got out of the car. “You did this!”

CHAPTER 13

It was an accident.

-I say that way too much for it to ever be an accident

MATILDA

I shouldn’t have been surprised to see my stepmother standing there, looking pissed as hell, but I was.

But, since she was there, I wasn’t surprised to see one of my brothers getting out of her passenger seat, or the other one getting out of her back seat.

Where she went, they went.

The only decent one of the bunch, Sadie, was a doctor and didn’t concern herself with her family’s shit. Not even me.

Which, with this family, I guess you could almost call that sisterly love.

“I did what?” I asked my stepmother.

“You made it to where your brothers and sister don’t have an inheritance! They can’t even live right now!” she screeched. “That is not something that I’m okay with!”

“Are you joking?” I asked. “Are you seriously joking right now?”

My stepmother’s cruel, evil eyes turned to me.

When the man at my side stepped up to me, pushed me back, and opened my van doors back up so the donkey could get some air, I fell a little bit in love with him.

Even with all kinds of shit going on right now, he remembered about poor Hubert.

Or, Wonky Donkey.

I’d named him Hubert on the way home. But then they’d started calling him Wonky. So I wasn’t sure which one to go with anymore.

I didn’t want to confuse him, either, by calling him what I wanted to call him.

“Are you even listening to me?” my stepmother screeched.

As a matter of fact, I was thinking dirty things about the man that was making my heart melt. So no, in fact, I wasn’t listening to her.

“No,” I admitted. “I’m kind of wanting to run my fingers through his hair right now, and I’m a bit distracted.”

Etienne’s hair was one of my most favorite things about him. I mean, other than the spongy head of his penis when it was soft…

A hand covered my mouth, and I looked up into the amused eyes of Etienne.

“What?” I asked him, but it came out muffled with his hand covering me.

“You said that out loud for everyone to hear,” he grinned and pulled his hand away. “Let’s not tell them you like it, okay?”

I grinned and went back to looking at my stepmother.
