It’s a bit of a gamble again, but I already have somewhere in mind. I made a spontaneous decision in the middle of saying it that I would only give her the best right from the start.

I have the place in mind, and it’s not a cheap little hole in the wall, that’s for sure. I’ll take her to my favorite restaurant. The best the city has to offer as far as I’m concerned. I’ll win her heart by showing her I can always provide her with the best.

After all, what else should she expect from life with an alpha male? And once she sees that I am the one for her, I will claim her body along with her heart and bond us together for always.

“Alright, now is good,” she agrees. I’m glad because I can’t wait for a second more. Once I have something in mind, it has to happen, and I don’t want to wait for anyone.

Although, I would wait for her if she needed me to.

“Let’s go, then,” I say. I get up quickly and go around to her side of the desk because I can’t resist the opportunity to offer her my hand to help her. That way, I get to touch her again.

She reaches out, and her hand connects with mine, and I know she feels it again. The electric shiver runs up both of our arms. Something inside our bodies is calling out to one another, and it can’t and won’t be denied.

She blushes a little and walks ahead of me as I assist her, eventually reaching the doorframe where I have to let her go. Then she moves through my house like a dream I once had, a fragment, and I have to rush after her to ensure she doesn’t disappear from exposure to the real world outside.

“Um,” she says, hesitating on the sidewalk. It’s starting to reach the evening, and her face glows in the twilight light. The winter weather may mean that she has to wear a coat to cover up that wonderful body I can glimpse underneath it, but it also means plenty of opportunities to offer to keep her warm – and a romantic dinner is much easier had by candlelight. “I don’t know which way to go.”

“Follow me,” I grin. I offered her my arm because why wouldn’t I? And whether she sees it as a gentlemanly gesture or a more overt way to ensure contact, I don’t know, but it doesn’t matter.

She takes my arm, and now we’re walking down the street together just as naturally as can be, and I feel like I must be the king of the whole world right now.

CHAPTER SEVEN

Jenna

I can’t believe my eyes when I see the restaurant Hunter is taking us into.

“This place?” I ask, my voice cracking with doubt.

“Yes,” he says, then turns to glance at me. “What’s wrong? Don’t you like Italian? I should have asked if you have any dietary requirements.”

“It’s not that,” I say, and I blush, stopping just short of gesturing to my body and pointing out that I clearly don’t have a problem with eating most foods. “It’s, well, this place looks kind of fancy.”

“Don’t worry about that,” Hunter says, flashing me a smile. “Dinner is on me. It’s the least I can do after what you’ve been through today.”

I still need to protest. “But that’s not right,” I say. “It wasn’t your fault. Actually, you rescued me. If anything, I should be the one buying you dinner.”

He tilts his head at me. “You might be right there,” he says. For a horrifying second, I think he’s going to make me buy him dinner at this expensive restaurant.

“Oh, well. I want to treat you anyway. I’ve always hated bullies, you know? Seeing something like that just makes me want to put the fear of god into them. And I can’t resist helping a damsel in distress.”

Is that what I am?

While I’m still trying to work out what that means, Hunter gestures toward the doors of the restaurant with a grin, and I find myself distracted enough to just follow him inside.

Does he mean that I’m a charity case and that’s all he sees in me? Does he mean that he is just a good person and helps out when he can? Maybe he’s rich from all his private detective work, and he doesn’t see this as a big deal.

How much is this service going to cost me?

Before I know it, we’re walking into the restaurant's main room and following a waiter to a table. We sit down, and Hunter pulls out my chair for me so that I don’t have to do it myself – and I realize we got all the way in here before I had finished objecting.

My head has been in such a spin today. I don’t know whether I’m coming or going. But I guess it looks like, for now, I’m staying put.
