But whatever I was thinking, I was wrong.

As I watch her smile and talk, toss her hair and shift her weight, unintentionally accentuating her hourglass hips, I know that I am, without question, completely in love with her.

Mya may in fact be my soul mate. It’s as though when Michael stole from me he was doing me a favor because firing him was what set all this in motion and brought Mya to me. If it wasn’t for him, would I ever have met her?

I like to think I would have, because she and I are meant to be together, and somehow, some way, the universe would have brought us together.

She told me about her dad leaving her when she was fifteen, and it broke my heart. I wanted to go hunt down the bastard and give him a good punch in the gut just to let him know what a son of a bitch he was for what he’d done to her. Any man who leaves his daughter like that is no real man, if you ask me.

She told me it was the reason she’s never really been able to trust men since then and why she tried leaving the first day she showed up here—why she didn’t want to take the job.

“I was afraid of you,” she told me. “Afraid I’d fall for you and that you’d hurt me.”

I understood when she told me that, but damn if it didn’t hurt me to hear her tell me that. Honestly, I’m surprised she’s stayed this long. Every day when I wake up, I’m wondering if she’ll be gone. If I’ll look over at the bed next to me and find it empty, her clothes gone from the closet and her car gone from the parking lot downstairs. I’m a strong man. I built this business on my own from nothing, and I manage the employees without anybody’s help, but the thought of losing Mya like that is enough to cause me a new kind of stress like I’ve never felt before.

And what will she do when I tell her I love her? Will she feel the same way and say it back, or does she get terrified and use that as an excuse to run off on me? I know she cares about me too, but this deep-seated insecurity she has that comes from her father is so powerful that I worry it might threaten our relationship if I push any more.

And that’s a problem because more is what I want from Mya.

“Looks like they shorted us a couple bags, boss,” Chuck, my main guy who works the trucks for me, says. I glance back and see him frowning at the last palette of bags of mulch.

“Just two?”

“Yeah.”

“All right, head back there now. I’ll call them and tell them you’re on your way.”

Chuck nods and begins to pack up the truck as I take out my cell and call our supplier. The guy at the desk gives me a bit of a hard time, but when he realizes he’s wrong and I’m right, he apologizes and says it will be no problem. I hang up and give Chuck a wave as he pulls out of the lot.

Mya is still with the customer, so I go over to the water spigot and do a cursory job washing the mulch and dirt off my hands, my eyes on her the entire time. At first, we made a rule that there would be no sex while at work, but that rule quickly crumbled after I think three days when I came into the back storeroom and saw her bending over with her nose deep in a filing cabinet and her shorts riding high up her thighs. I took her right then and there—just slid her shorts down and gave it to her quick and hard before letting her get back to whatever it was she was doing.

I’d like to interrupt her right now, tell that customer of hers that there’s some work I need her to attend to up in the office, take her up there and lock the door, lay her down on the floor and tug those jeans down and bury my face between her perfect thighs until my face is as wet as she is.

But I’m not going to do that. I can’t. As much as I want to, I do still have a business to run here, and Mya is part of that business. She’s my employee, my best employee. I built this company, and if I start acting like an idiot and let it come crashing down, I won’t have anything to support either of us with.

Mya laughs at something the customer says, showing that gleaming and mesmerizing smile that I fell in love with when we first met. I can already tell that she’s made a sale without knowing what it is, but as she grabs her tablet she uses to take down orders, I know this is going to be a while, so I head up to the house to grab a snack bar and a water.
